RE: the real Nairobi -

Nairobi is a city like any other and the same rules apply.
Avoid displaying prominent jewellery or expensive equipment (cellphone, camera).
Move around with a trustworthy local who can speak the lingo.
Avoid moving around from dusk onwards.
Otherwise its hardly as bad as they say. Not everyone you meet is a thug and most of the people are really nice if you get to know 'em.
There are a lot of nice places to see but you need to move around with someone who knows the City well.
For the ideal experience, travel light when you do go around and if you must change money do it in a Hotel or a not so populated part of town and do it discretely. Sure the rates are horrible in the nicer places but it's well worth it if you get to keep your cash.
Keep an open mind and you should get by.
Now that I look at it, I sound like a tourist guide! Ah well, I'm sure other Mashadites will be more specific where I've been general.
Welcome to Africa sister! Have a good time.
And oh yeah, if you miss out on Kenyan nightlife, you haven't been to Kenya at all. It's much safer than you think.
