Default furnished apartments in Nairobi - 09-25-2004, 06:54 AM

Salaams to all

I am looking for some advice. My family and I are visiting Kenya sometime in October or November and are renting an apartment. What can you tell me about the following furnished apartments in Nairobi:

Maki Apartments
Mimosa Apartments
Protea Apartments
The Gables
Bid Apartments
Heron Court
High Point Court

Is any better than the other, and are they located at reasonably safe areas of Nairobi? Easily accessible by public transport? Its been about 8 years since I've been home and I know things have changed a lot. I've heard a lot of good things about home, so I'm really excited. My husband is American and he can't wait to see nyumbani yangu.

I look forward to hearing from you. And thanks in advance.

Asante sana

Maki Apartments:
Well sized apartments, conveniently located right off of Ngong road opposite the Coptic hospital. I stayed there for a month and was totally disgruntled by both the services rendered and the overall condition of the apartments.
At ksh.80000 per 3 bedrooms, these apartments have undeniably seen better times. Fixtures, such as toilet seats and door knobs were missing or broken, floors and walls were stained, not to mention the dirty carpets
The promised 6 days a week cleaning of the apartment was irregular and poorly done and their rude security guards let anyone in without announcing them.
I would recommend Mimosa Court apartments which are located behind Maki apartments. These are slightly higher priced but the services offered and the staff make it worth a spend!

I just want to warn you to be prepared since its nothing that you hear.I had heard the same that things have changed for the good!!They must have been real bad if they call that good!!I WAS SHOCKED when i visited this year, like you after 8 years. If you arrive at night you'll be lucky you wont be able to see much. But you'll smell;diesel fumes, sweat, animals, dirt.Nairobi is just dirty and the traffic is just chaos. The only difference is that the nissos have a yellow line and thin strips of cloth for safety-belt(innovation)the upcountry buses/nissos first go to the police stations and everyone is searched before they proceed.Town ones do the same in evening(CRIME)The roads are patches of tarmac on holes.mombasa rd is banked on one side by jua-kali sofasets.aLL THE WAY TO THE TOWNCENTRE!!.there are more tv an radiostations.taarifa is only about rapes, mungiki, miracle stolen children and murders.Thats why mrs kibakis story is a sensation there. On the bright side.
upcountry looked better for me with space and quiet.there are furnished houses in limuru.runda is ok.
Anyway its our Home and make the best of it.

It is amazing how much people can trash where they are from and make it look like some sort of hell hole, not worth of savages living in it. There is nothing noble like loyalty. I have never heard people from other parts of the world trash their country like Kenyans do. Even Ugandans, Ethiopians, Somalis and many more poor, hungry and war tone nations are proud to be citizens of their countries. As Kenyans, it is digrunting and painfull to see people who think Kenya should be Dallas or Washington DC overnite. Kenya and Nairobi for that matter can only compare and compete with Nairobi and its people. We sure hope things will change for the better, and I am sure they are, but it takes time. Starting with cloth seat belt is a step foward, Matatus passing by police station to ensure safety of its passengers is a leap forward...potholes with Asphalt around them for a road...well, things will improve. Learn to be loyal, trashing your country like that on the internet is a shame and can only hurt the country!

Hi,

I posted this message originally in 2004 ... I have since been back home. I stayed at Mimosa Court (contact email: info@mimosacourt.com) you can ask for Rosemary.

I had a lovely stay there - it was wonderful to go back home. I saw much improvements and I don't have anything but nice things to say about my stay at Mimosa and about Kenya.

I think it cost about $1000 back then - I'm sure there have been rate increases. The rental included services of a maid. That was nice - didn't have to worry about washing clothes. I have to admit I wasn't looking forward to that!

Good luck on your visit back and enjoy!
;)
