Countryboy i read about the same thing some time back. The painting is not of Leornado himself but the base structure/ outline and core of the face was based on leornados facial dimensions.

the dude decided to do this after he had become bored with plain ol art. He decided to approach it from a scientific angle and alas...the Mona Lisa was born

I geuss that why it has become so popular.

Now MTT , Michelangelo and the likes never mentioned anything because this issue was discovered recently by some woman here in the states. Its not something that was discovered 20 years ago or something like that. Before u dispute look it up.

The Mona Lisa should be in France at the moment..At some art museum in Paris...last i read about it still being there was early last year when they were building a new place for it.
