The decision by Obama to visit Ghana other than any other Black African country is of great significant in many ways, and will go down in history as a turning point in the now dormant Pan Africanism campaign. It is a show of solidarity with the Late Dr. Kwame Nkurumah, the first president of Ghana and one of the lead pan-africanism activist who dreamed of a united Afrika. Nkurumah must be remembered was a student of the teachings of Marcus Garvey, the father of pan africanism and the advocate of the Back-to-Africa movement.

Nkurumah believed in a united people under one nation and guided by the true Afrikan philosophy of traditional social structure fueled through economic independence. Kwameh noted that Africa is one continent, one people, and one nation. Truely, we are one yet we continue to be divided by tribal affiliation, class, greed and political difference. He believed that the riches of Mama Afrika should enrich the people of Africa. Specifically he said that "Africa is a paradox which illustrates and highlights neo-colonialism. Her earth is rich, yet the products that come from above and below the soil continue to enrich, not Africans predominantly, but groups and individuals who operate to Africa’s impoverishment"

The significance of the trip by Obama should be a lesson in the possibility of the impossible to some of us who continue to believe in the Pan Africanism dream and a united Africa that offers a safe home to all Afrikans within Afrika and in the diaspora. We must use the ocassion to reflect on the dream of Kwame Nkurumah and his comrades in the Pan Afrikan activism. We must also use the ocassion to medidate on the vision of the father of Pan Afrikanism, Marcus Garvey, and the sacrifices of the leaders of our liberation movements and our freedom fighters who have never given up fighting for Mama Afrika.
