Default Ideal & Moral Vs Real & Practical. - 05-16-2008, 04:15 AM

Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince, first published in 1532, is certainly the most shocking book ever written about political leadership. People refuse to acknowledge his works because his work still contains the sting of truth that is not contestable. He rejected the Ideal and Moral and preferred the Real and Practical.

In the footsteps of Machiavelli many of our politicians seek to gain the support of the electorate by any conceivable methods. They chatter, coax, and cajole, they pretend, deceive, and promise the world and if this is ineffective they steal or they kill.

It is t rue that it is not in the power of government to make everyone more prosperous. Politicians have no inclination to morality either. But they have a responsibility to use our taxes to make it possible for us to transform our lives.

I dont want handout from Government, but I dont want to employ a policeman or build a road for myself. That is the duty of government.

Kenyan Government knows very well that due to their greed and stupidity, people were displaced and farmers did not grow food. So we will be starving next year for sure. It is not accidental and should not be a surprise. So what should a practical government do? instead of talking the rubbish that they are talking about- they should just use the money they are keeping and the money they are hoping to get from donors (ostensibly to buy food reserves) to supply free seeds and fertilisers to farmers and ask them to plant now in - as a late crop.

Simply put, they should buy and take the sacks around the village and dump them. Or give farmers vouchers to go and pick food inputs from the nearest stores. Of course my fear is that being Kenya-there will be corrupt dealers who will be listed as having supplied seeds and so are entitled to the money from government. If this loop hole can be contained. it is a possibility.

That will sound economically daft if you are clinging to text book knowledge-but in practical sense it is the right thing to do. It may sound communist or kibbutzim but it will put food on the table come next year.

Why in hell does a government spend billions buying food which they will later distribute -one bag per household when they could have given that farmer a bag of seeds and a bag of fertiliser and the farmer would have produced 20 bags of maize-enough for him/her and enough to sell to (cereal board) or those who dont have? I must admit that when it comes to this policy, i sound daft. May be a more clever person here can enlighten me.
