Default RE: Did Jesus Have An Affair ? The History - 07-02-2006, 10:43 PM

Jesus is a name in Greek and Aramaic. Joshua is in Hebrew. Yeshua was common in NT times. The meaning is that Yahweh is salvation and is alluded in Mt.1:21,Lk2:21 The Greek "Christos" translates into the Hebrew for "Mesiah".

Jesus is mentioned by three Roman historians. Suetonius(life of claudius 25,4) who expelled jews in Rome for riots instigated by Chrestos. During this period, the jews and christians were avowed enemies.

Tacitus wrote about the persecution of christians under Nero after the burning of Rome. He mentions Christ as the one executed by the procurator Pontius Pilate in the reign of Tiberias (Annals 15,14).

Pliny writes a letter to Trajan, asking for instructions on how to deal with the christian sect in Bithynia. They were assembling before sunrise to sing hymns in honor of Christ as a God (Epistles 10,96).

The other source of information on Jesus is the writings of Josephus who mentions him twice. First as the brother of James (AJ 20,9,1) and second as a wise man (Aj 18,3). Note that the apocryphal gospels are historically worthless.
