@billywong: who is asking the questions- him or you? If it’s you, then I suggest you abandon your quest to categorize him. You don’t have to label your friend. At this point, he’s just a human trying to make sense of his life. I don’t know if “the Church” can help him out. But I think that 3 things will help him:
1) Genuine spirituality
2) A sympathetic non-judgemental listener.
3) A permanent source of stability in his life.
He may or may not find these in the church that he’s attending. At any rate, he shouldn’t attach too much value to judgmental attitudes. Ppl can be pretty vicious (as is evident from some of these responses). He may be feeling disillusioned, but if he’s been able to turn his life around (reference to drinking, smoking and communication), then he is on the right track. If he persists, the answers he’s seeking will follow.
