According to the bible, the gift of "tongues" is a gift of the Holy Spirit. This is one of the reasons I am careful when commenting about matters of tongues since the only sin that is unforgivable is the sin of "grieving the Holy Spirit".

I remember a preacher saying something which somehow clarified this issue. He said that the gift of tongues is manifested in two different forms, which are;

1. Talking in Tongues
2. Praying in Tongues

Of the two, Praying in tongues is one of the signs of a christian who has been filled by the Holy Spirit. The gift of Talking in tongues goes hand in hand with the gift of Interpreting Tongues. Therefore its only prudent for one to talk in tongues when someone else can interpret this strange tongues to the congregant such that the word of the Lord is passed along.
