  Mortar and Bricks

   » ‎ Words Much Like Poetry
  It was more than a late summer romance, I pressed closed
  the hole in your heart, filled it with the mortar and bricks
  I brought into this world—the angels told me, as I was held
  in the nurturing waters of life, I would need them one day.
  
  In September, I betrayed you, October found forgiveness
  a new home, but by January, I hadn’t seen you in weeks.
  When I did, you bundled me into a rocket and launched me
  at the eternal sky—I landed somewhere between Castor
  and Pollux. Merry gentleman boys that they were, I
  eventually lost my ability to distinguish them and nicknamed them
  the Gemini man, humph! before long Jason bade him
  marry me. So, the Argo made port in the western province
  of the home where my soul resides; that was late March. While there
  a faithful man repeated my cue, from then on one became my number.
  
  An ancient age or a few years passed, by then the Argo had sailed,
  dust trails the only evidence it ever existed. My family summoned me.
  Expectantly, I packed lightly—the little pieces of myself I couldn’t do
  without. The Gemini man was left on the dry land we made our home.
  
  So summoned, I flew into my kin’s little lasting embrace. Once released
  from their fold, I bought myself a river and sang the blues at its side.
  A Virgin strolling by heard my song, he swayed well to the rhythm
  and together we danced. Ah, but that less then pure vestal soon tired
  of my despair, my hopes, my ambitions, even my dreams. He trilled gleefully
  to the meadowlark that had been circling above for some time,
  just as gleefully the meadowlark—the symbol I bequeathed unto
  my poverty—spread its wings, casting me in shadow.
  
  The meadowlark still peers down at me, in the eight years that have passed
  since our late summer love, its gracious perch upon the withered stump
  of the once life tree remains unshakable. I wonder if you’ve torn down
  the mortar and bricks I laid, if so, cracked and broken as they might be,
  can I borrow them?

  Prof Alston came and declared his unflattering verdict on the three musketeers. Well, they vilified him but look who is smiling from ear to ear now. Ali is cooling his heels at Posta, Wako's lips are fatigued from plastic smiles and next will be CJ Gicheru. The noose is tightening quite fast.
  
  Prof Luis Moreno Ocampo has set his own agenda and demanding that the script be followed to the letter. While his actions would smack of neo-colonialism to apologists, many Kenyans are cheering him on for taking on the might and doing what they wish but can never do given the suffocating impunity.
  
  So is it the beginning of the end for kings and princes of impunity? But again this is Kenya and king Louis XVI may choose to ignore the impending heat while his wife Marie Antoinette asks Kenyans to eat cake if they cannot afford githeri?

  Game 3 saw Scarecrow take on Melvin Jones in the morning game at RVSC.
  
  Melvins won the toss and elected to bat but struggled against the new ball attack of Scarecrow with Prabdeep (?) ripping through the top order to take 4/15 off his 4 overs. Jayendra Patel (19) was the only Melvin's batsman to reach double figures as Faiz (?) 2/18 and Girish (?) 2/7 also got into the act to have Melvins all back in the pavillion after 17.3 overs with just 74 on the board.
  
  It should always have been an easy run chase for Scarecrow and Melvins needed to bowl a tight line if they were to stay in the match. In fact the opposite happened and while wickets did fall, the extras piled up - 24 in all and Scarecrow romped to victory with 5 wickets and 8 overs to spare.
  
  Game 4 saw P.B.H.Royal Cubs take on Rift Valley Sports Club in what proved to be an absolute thriller. Winning the toss PHB elected to bat and posted 173 thanks to 2 batsmen. Divyang Patel played an anchoring role from the middle order with an unbeaten 49, but it was the fireworks from Bilal ? (pictured) that really set the ground alight. He plundered a thundering 70 off just 16 balls dealing exclusively in boundaries and without slogging. Runs came from all areas of the ground and he played genuine cricket strokes to make them. Though he was eventually bowled by Chris Sterling, he had effectively set his team up for a good defence. For their part, the RVSC bowlers stuck to their guns with Luke Nightingale once again the pick taking 4/27. Sahil ? (2/36) and Dalveer ? (2/40) the other bowlers to pick up wickets.
  
  RVSC's reply looked to be in good hands with Ed Bolderstone (35) and Luke Nightingale (65*) setting up the platform at the beggining of the innings and Chris Sterling (37) taking them closer to victory. Wickets then fell rapidly as they tried to get over the line with 3 run outs eventually costing them a 1 run defeat.   2gay Kenyans get married in the UK.
  My mom forwarded me an email with the pictures and her only comment was "Ngai, ni wa kikuyu!" *God, they are kikuyus.
  My mom is the most liberal parent i have ever met. I know she's got nothing against gay people. She's met my gay friends both in Kenya and in SA. Funtimes.
  
  As long as I'M not gay. (that's always the line right?)
  
  I've been reading on the net about how it's been all over the news, and the matter wasn't handled well. Everyone was/is talking about it.
  Although, i digress, i heard the blackout that happened yesterday was a temporary distraction.
  I'm straight, i've had my share of girl on girl action, you know, typical college girl stuff. But i'm into men. i've got nothing against gay folk. and i don't mean nothing against like 'they should only do whatever behind closed doors', or 'they should stop airing shows like will and grace or the l-word.' or 'children shouldn't be exposed to that kind of behaviour' that's a load of bull. I'm no expert but i know you can't catch it! It's not a cold! Shit... The only issue i'd have is if they were excessively PDAin (Public Display of Affection) which by the way is my stand for straight couples as well... So yeah. So don't say i don't get it. they can makeout a little, hold hands but even seeing a guy and a girl, guy's tongue down girl's throat, guy's hand down girl's pants or in girl's blouse... Get a room! :)
  Now replace "girl" with "guy" dudes, get a room still! No bif...

  I was reading this guy's facebook status, he was saying how the government won't accept it! And he said "this is Kenya! They shouldn't even be thinking about such things!"

  So here is a very heterosexual female not understanding why the rest of the population can't accept gay folk. They're not hurting anyone, just being them. I'm a sucker for love. How some gay guys talk about their relationships... it's so sweet, they still get whipped the way straight people do. Love is love. just be thankful to exist in the same space and time as the person you've fallen inlove with. (i think Maya Angelou said that in some movie)
  
  Then how people were calling it UNNATURAL and UNAFRICAN???
  
  Un-African? Really? I'm just happy where i study, the gay guys are allowed to be open. The cool cute gay guys actually their own clique at varsity. infact, the last MR.(name of uni) was gay... and i'm in SA so they shouldn't go around calling it UNAFRICAN.

  I'm sure the gay guys who are reading this must be rolling their eyes. They must have heard that "Adam and Steve" line a thousand times!
  what i don't get is how the same people calling it un-cristian and reaching for the Holy Water, are the people we party with, who are doing the whole drinking, smoking, casual sex, stealing, lieing and coveting thing. So fine, of you're gonna use religion as a crutch, let's say for a moment that being gay is a "sin" you should get of your high horse coz there's a bunch of other commandments that you are breaking as well...
  Religion is currently not a strong point of mine.
  
  Then i saw on twitter and also on blogger that the govt. Is gonna spend ksh.40mil to count the gay folk. I still don't know what my take on that is... It's awesome that they are starting to acknowledge that gay people are there instead of sweeping it under the rag like they were some kind of problem... I'd like to know what the gays think about this whole census thing. And will they be willing to come out and be counted, or is the government planning to conduct it annonymously? And are they doing the census with changing the constitution in mind? It's illegal to be gay in Kenya right?
  Lemmi know what you guys think.
  
  All i know is that i went to this gay party once, and IT WAS AWESOME! finger food and wine glasses and they had decorated it really well. Fun times! Those guys could dance, poppin and droppin and everything. (i'm not trying to stereotype that all gay men can dance, i'm just saying!) I must have been about seventeen at the time. We just had a "gay old time" (pun intended!)

  My honest opinion, and I will accept chastisement for my ignorance, is that homosexual Kenyans are far safer, far far safer with the government than they are with the Kenyan public. This is one of those issues like the Mau debate, or caning in schools, or the death penalty where the state will be more likely to defend and protect human rights than the public, the media or even civil society leadership will be to sue for it.

  American Meb Keflezighi Defeats Kenyans in the New York Marathon 2009

  American Athlete Meb Keflezighi yesterday stunned the world by winning the 2009 New York Marathon at a time of  2 hours  9 minutes and15 seconds.Meb Keflezighi beat seasoned Kenyan marathoner Robert Cheruiyot by 41 seconds.Interestingly this is a first American win of the Marathon since 1982 and just indicates why this is great news for the American continent. The Eritrean born Meb Keflezighi was last year number two in the NY marathon and it seems he has definately upped his game.
  
  
  On the other hand Kenyans back home are little pleased as this is their niche of play and the lack of a win was somehow disappointing. The women race however went to competitive African athlete Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia .
  
  It seems Kenyan athletes will now have to brace themselves for stiff competition from Americans and not just Ethiopians and Eritreans since a number of the Americans finished in the top 10 bracket.But Kudos to Robert Cheruiyot there's always a next time as illustrated in Meb's story

  National Blackout, A missed interview show and a date with Braeburn School

  I had mentioned(read -mildly bragged) that our Poetry group, Mstari wa Nne would be appearing on K24 for as part of an Entertainment show during the Daniel Pearl World Music day celebration at Paa Ya Paa. Apparently, the show did not come and even if it did, the whole country was in the dark due to a black out whose cause is yet to be established.
  I will be following up with Remmy of K24 on this.
  
  In other news, we (Mstari) have received and Invitation from Braeburn Garden Estate School  for a performance during their closing day towards the end of November. This was after our performance at PYP, something that really impressed the invited guests.
  
  More details will be coming soon when the date and time is confirmed. I must say this is a great opportunity for us to inspire students who still frown at the mention of poetry. I hope that we can get more invites from Learning Institutions.
