» the-undergraduate Graduation preparation and rehearsals=mind numbing,sanity depleting madness!!
Gowns dont fit and when you find one that's kidogo decent,it'll be in last century's pile thats so faded it's hard to tell whether it's grey,greenish or a lighter shade of black!The guys in charge dont even bother sorting them out so you end up trying on atleast ten before you can find one you wont accidentally trip over!!And the hats....i'll have to get huge braids so i can pin it on cos it's likely to fly off!!Glass half full.....maybe that's just an annual ritual designed for graduates to interact as you go round asking different people to help you decide between the new gowns that are xxxxxxl and mali ya zamani that's like xxxxl with a few slits and holes you have to cleverly conceal :).I couldnt stop laughing when some dude asked whether theyre all unisex cos he wanted gown ya wanaume with puffed shoulder pads that'll give him the kinda ego boost he needs to perfect his walk to the podium!He even has that 'lean back' walk he's been practising but i bet he'll be so nervous he wont even remember!I bet i'll also have an embarrasing tale afterwards cos sometimes i get clumsy when am nervous or shy :p
Am looking forward to the drama that'll most likely breakout at the main gate on the graduation morning now that they decided to limit the number of guests to 6 per graduate.I bet most families have more than six members not forgetting the over excited parents who tend to invite the whole village.Personally,6 is too many for me and I just wish days would move slowly cos i am not ready for all the hype!!
That aside,today i decided to preach water and drink from the same cup as everyone else.
Over time I have changed alot,both good and bad!!Am trying my best and i hope to capitalize on the good.Being nice and down to earth is not that easy but i've got the rest of my life to work on that.
I hope i get the patience to be kind too despite the circumstances;forgiveness triumphs over holding grudges anyday
Hmmm....now about keeping all the promises ive made to people...what if they make it hard for me to follow through?

African news and views have moved to the web, notably with the spectacular success of www.AllAfrica.com. But there has been no comparable Africa-wide site which provides in-depth analysis and debate of the issues and controversies that animate the continent today. With the launch of African Arguments Online we intend to fill this gap.
Three years ago we launched the book series ‘African Arguments’ with the International African Institute and Zed Books and distributed by Palgrave Macmillan in the USA. it is a vision I don’t think that they shall realize
you see I’m
waking up in the morning
and the mood is like we’re mourning
has it hit them? is it dawning?
do they need so many warnings?
they spoke about
water for all by the year 2000
it is 2009 they ration water in the city..
electricity’s a good commodity to have these days
only when it’s not blacking out like the village drunk…for days
my government…it’s ministries..
they work hard..they’re full of industry
their end result…a mystery
their salaries..our misery
they amazed us the way they used public funds
to fly and watch television far away in Obama’s land
they had the audacity to appeal for famine relief
yet they wallow in opulence that simply brings us grief
they ride in fuel guzzlers..to the big house to muzzle us
they turn a blind eye…the public interest they defy
they reinstate vandals associated with scandals
they are posturing creatures who threatened striking teachers
the economy they spoil..with shortages of oil

Karura Forest win Nairobi junior development tournament

The mini cricket brought together 5 schools all from nairobi namely Westlands Primary, Karura Forest, Muranga Road, Roysambu and the host Highridge Primary School. Each school was represented by 12 kids and i kept 4 girls in each team, so there were a total of 60 kids playing on the day.
They played 8 overs per side and every school played 4 games. The top two went to the finals but we could not play the 3rd and 4th place because of time.
Karura and Highridge played in the very exciting finals. Karura got 50 runs batting first and ended up the winners as Highridge lost needing 2 runs off the last ball.
Alan Sang of Karura was the Player of the tournament, Jane Achieng of Highridge best fielder and Alan Mbuthia of Westlands was the best bowler.

Another Boon for Sports
» SportsKenya The corporate world in Kenya seems to have smelt the coffee and finally woken up to the reality of the potential in sports. This week saw another company agree to sponsor Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Games to be held later on this month in Malindi. This package's worth KShs. 5.5 million, no mean feat for junior sports, from Brookside Dairies.
This is hot in the heels of another corporate's sponsorship of the same event-Barclays Bank of Kenya. The competition that corporate firms are having to sponsor this and that sport is really healthy and creating some buzz in the sports world. The exposure that we have gained through such initiatives is enormous and the company's too learn a thing or two about their target market.
This is to hoping we shall see more and more money making its way into sport and investing in the younger lads. These guys are bursting off the blocks and are waiting in the wings, rugby 7s and athletics can attest to this.
But we must not forget to keep the sports officials in check, they still need some serious professionalism infused. We can't lie down and expect heaven with monies pouring in, work for the next big thing. Ask the US Basketball Collegiate League and the NBA ! -
AFC vs Gor Mahia- Days gone by

One of Kenya's major sporting landmarks back in the day was a battle of the titans in Kenyan football, AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia. These two teams attracted huge fan bases. I can confess to have been a fan of one of the teams, and one of the first live matches which lured me into football back in the day involved one of these teams playing the local lads in our town ( yes I'm NOT the typical Nairobian though that's become like my hub for now...I digress).
Armed with traditional dancers and all sorts of paraphernalia, the legions of fans had become the backbone of these teams and travelled far and wide to ensure the teams won their games. AFC Leopards was the first team in the region to win the CECAFA Club Championship 3 times. They have also won the League 12 times. On the other hand, Gor Mahia is the only East African club to have won the African Club Cup Winners Cup back in 1987 and also follow AFC closely with 11 wins of the League.
That was then.
Right now the two clubs are faring badly with AFC at the bottom of the table while Gor Mahia is also flirting with the bottom half of the table standings. This weekend the 2 teams face off at Nyayo Stadium against a backdrop of heavy stakes on either side; AFC looking to regain their winning ways while Gor Mahia can't afford another loss as their fans have demonstrated rather loudly.
If you feel inclined to shout yourself hoarse and also risk a limb or two, be there tomorrow afternoon. If you are like some of others, please stay at home and watch the game on SuperSport. -
Kenyan Football- National jokers !
» SportsKenya I thought I was not reading it right but the Kenyan national team( 105th on FIFA rankings) is planned to play friendly games in Malaysia, South East Asia. Yes Malaysia, ranked 152nd in the world ! What criteria do our football officials use to get these friendlies that they play before crucial matches? From the rankings, it would even be better playing our neighbours Uganda who are the highest ranked East Africans at 75th place.
Or maybe we are trying to be like the European teams whose mission there is more commercial than anything? Or maybe we will re-discover our firepower? The weather is unfavourable and there are just enough reasons why this trip stinks to high heaven.
Tell us FKL officials, what's this all about?
