Ask the the ladies, and they say, “He is on fire!” When he makes a comment on Facebook, it is usually followed by numerous, almost-instantaneous, responses. When he has a show, he pulls crowds that rival the rallies by smooth-talking politicians.

As he begins his Salari Tour in North America, The African Accent had an opportunity to talk to David Mathenge, to gain some insight into this Kenyan phenomenon, better known as Nameless.

The name, Nameless, suggests obscurity. However, the reality is that you have made quite a name for yourself, and you are very much in the limelight. How did you decide on the name, and is it still relevant?
It initially came up because I was in the industry for a while without recognition: I did many shows without local appreciation for the music, and without pay. I kept looking for the right name and image … however nothing seemed to work. When my break came, I was asked what my name was ... I just found myself utter "Nameless" and that was that!!! And yes, the name is still relevant today because it reminds me where I have come from!!!

It was in 1999, your second year of university, when you broke into the music scene. In a previous interview, you said that back then, it was more economical to produce and release singles, as opposed to whole albums because of weak domestic sales, and little to no radio exposure for artists. Has the domestic situation improved? If yes, what has been the most significant improvement? If no, what would you like to see improve, or what are you doing to better the situation?
No, the domestic situation hasn’t improved. In fact even the international situation is becoming similar; whereby CD sales are being negatively affected by downloads and piracy. Now, even international record labels are contemplating releasing singles and fully exploiting singles through ring tones, downloads, concerts, et cetera; they say it is more economical and less risky. I met some record executives in Europe who told me this. I secretly smiled because in my own small way i was using this principle ten years earlier! hahaha!

Nameless is synonymous with mega hits. 'Ninanoki' was on Kiss FM's number one spot for 110 consecutive days. Your music is also known for its wide appeal: 'Megarider' is a perfect example of a song you could find a ten year old enjoying just as much as an 80 year old. Is that part of your strategy, or is it coincidental magic that Nameless has?
It is every artists hope and dream to get a wide appeal through their music. It is also very challenging to get a crossover appeal with one song; and if you do you are lucky!! Some of my songs have managed to cross over, however, others have been more targeted to different classes and age groups. So I guess its part strategy, part luck, part magic and part blessing!

Do you feel restricted as an artist by censorship, fan attitudes, fan expectations, or even by your role as a husband, and father?
Definitely! The number of songs I have had to hold back due to fan expectations, censorship or my role as a husband and dad are many ... these are some of the challenges of growing as an artist or brand. You get more restricted, and, you are under more scrutiny.

Your 2009 tour has taken you across Europe and now North America. Is there a venue that you were looking forward to most?
Well, I look forward to anywhere that I will meet my fans and entertain. I have been to Europe and Canada before but not as intense as this. In Canada I have four shows across the country. In Europe I had 6 show in different countries. This is very exciting for an artist; to travel and meet different people and experience different cultures through music.

The East African Standard newspaper included you in the list of 100 most influential Kenyans in 2007. How much does this influence hinder or advance your ability to lead a normal life? For example, are you able to walk around down town Nairobi without drawing fans, or does the novelty wear off?
It was an honor to be on that debatable list. However, to be considered was definitely a moral booster in what I do for a living. It means that I do influence peoples lives (hopefully positively). Once you are in the public eye you have to accept to belong to the public. So yes, you get approached by strangers on the street, and get a lot of stares and whispers following you. After some time you get used to it. Kenyans are also very conservative, so you don’t get people jumping all over you in the streets like in the West. You can live a more or less normal life with a few stares here and there. hahaha!

Rumor has it that Wahu's new album, due in January, will include your first duet with her. How come we have not seen more collaborations?
Yes. I have collaborations with my wife, which are to be released soon. The reason we haven’t released them before was because we wanted to grow as different, and separate brands that are strong individually, before we do our collaborations. We live in the same house, so we had to consciously separate our brands in music, so that the collaboz can be stronger.

Zari Media Ltd. What is its core business, and how successful is this venture?
You definitely have done your research! Zari is a separate company that I have with two partners. It is an audio-visual studio, media house. Our core business is commercials and jingles as well as song recordings. We may get into signing artists soon but we are still young and growing.

Media people, look out for Zari!

The fans had a few questions for you. The most interesting being: Do you have a stalker?
hahaha! Yes of course. I have some fans who have taken it too far and become obsessed. It is normal for some people to be clouded by the hype and imagine you are in a deep relationship with them or want more than you can offer.

Is there anything coming up for the 10th anniversary of E-Sir's passing?
Yes. We will definitely do something big in memory of E-sir, his legacy and the other artists we have lost in our industry. They are our brothers and sisters who made major contributions in our growing industry and we must thank them for that!

Where can fans legitimately acquire your music?
Blast My Music found on MySpace Nameless Kenya, or on the Facebook Nameless Fans or my personal page, David K Mathenge.

Thanks again for a very intriguing interview that was well researched, intellectual and different.

There you have it: an insight into Nameless the brand, by David K. Mathenge: performing artist, entrepreneur, husband, father, and role model.

Upcoming Salari Tour Shows:

Friday, July 3rd, 2009 – Ottawa, Ontario.
For tickets, contact DJ Biko of SoulChild Entertainment at (613) 796-6778

Saturday, July 4th 2009 – Toronto, Ontario.
For tickets, contact Rigzklan Entertainment at (416) 975-0535, or Zink Productions at (647) 299-9646

Friday, July 10th 2009 – Vancouver, British Columbia.
Kenya Cricket: Kenya no longer to host U19 world Cup

In a bombshell to Kenyan cricket delivered at the ICC board meeting, it has been decided that Kenya is now deemed unfit to host the 2010 Under 19 World Cup.

According to an ICC press release:

The Board received a report on the readiness of Kenya to host the ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup 2010.

It concluded that with only eight months to go before the event, which Cricket Kenya was awarded in 2006, it was unrealistic to expect Kenya to be ready to host given the large amount of work still needing to be done, despite some grounds such as the Mombasa Sports Ground (above) already better than several ODI pitches elsewhere in the World - this photo was taken on june 18th 2009. courtesy CCA webpage.

It was agreed that New Zealand would be the location for the tournament, subject to the agreement of satisfactory terms.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: “We have been working with Kenya to monitor their progress towards staging the ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup for some time, with visits to the locations earmarked for matches and regular reports to the ICC Board.

“Regrettably, the conclusion reached was that the amount of work still to be done to get many of the venues ready was such that retaining Kenya as a host represented too great a risk to the successful staging of the event.

“It is a difficult conclusion to have reached and a regrettable one from the perspectives of both the ICC and Cricket Kenya, but with just eight months to go before the scheduled start, we could not proceed on the basis of hoping that everything would be ready next February.

“The ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup is the highest profile event in the ICC’s development calendar. Coverage of the matches is broadcast all around the world and it is a recognised stepping stone for players to graduate to full international level.

“By way of examples, since the latest edition of the tournament, in Malaysia in February/March last year, India’s Virat Kohli, Wayne Parnell of South Africa and New Zealand’s Tim Southee have all gone on to play for their countries.

“We hope Kenya will be able to stage ICC events in the future and we are grateful to New Zealand Cricket for its offer to stage the tournament. It did so successfully in 2002 and we look forward to it doing so again in 2010.”

This is an absolute disaster for Kenyan cricket and also seems like pretty harsh treatment from the ICC. Eight months is hardly the "short" period of time they seem to think. Stadia for Olympics have been rushed to completion in less time, it is hardly as though Kenya could not get pitches and facilities organised in this time. What is especially puzzling is that when the ICC last inspected the preparations, they expressed themselves happy with how things were going. There was no indication they were unhappy, certainly no indication that they were so disappointed that the venue would have to be changed.

Ramifications for Kenya from this are massive and devastating. Cricket Kenya has invested millions of shillings in upgrading the facilities, which while it will benefit club level domestic cricket in the country could have gone far further in establishing and promoting the game at the grass roots level which is where the most pressing work needs to be done. Whether the ICC will be willing to assist Cricket Kenya in recovering from this remains to be seen, but given their shortsightedness and desire for money it is unlikely.

Kenya sent an understrength team to the regional qualifiers based on the fact that as they had already qualified, it would be better to let some less experienced players get a taste of experience and allow some of the more senior players to study for their exams. Or so it was claimed by Cricket Kenya after the teams sorry performance. This may now turn around to bite Kenya in the foot as again the ICC has not made it clear whether losing their hosting rights also means Kenya will lose their automatic qualification. If it does, it will mean Kenya will have missed out on the last 3 Under 19 World Cups - a damning statistic in the light of the improving nations snapping at their heels.

For Cricket Kenya, it will also come as a massive blow as it is in effect a vote of no confidence from the highest echelons of the ICC. There is already criticism from several quarters at home that will quadruple in the light of the lack of faith now shown by the ICC. They will need to act fast and decisively if this is not going to sweep them away. The last thing Kenyan cricket needs is more infighting, but this is exactly what this decision will spawn.

Hopefully this is a decision that Cricket Kenya will appeal - and appeal they must, however unlikely it may seem that the ICC may change its mind. At the top of Cricket Kenya are some very savvy lawyers, this must now be the time for them to earn their keep. They could start with the question of if Kenya was a Test nation would this happen? Example: West Indies World Cup 2007. That was an organisational disaster right down to the final, but the Windies were never threatened with losing it, let alone 8 months out. As usual with the ICC treatment of Associates, this stinks and Cricket Kenya must do whatever they can to correct it.Become a fan of Kenya Cricket.com on facebook: [www.facebook.com]

Wacko Jacko was more than a phenomenon, he was an institution. Besides his record breaking sales, his electrifying dance moves of yore were not only athletic but remain uniquely synonymous with MJ.

He inspired a generation and for those who grew during his time Michael Jackson ROCKED THE WORLD. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe MJ's lyrics ring true and uplifting to every music lover.

As a human being he had his ups and downs but MJ's music was and is still like aphrodiastics. From the best selling THRILLER, to Black or White to Heal the World, Michael has left a piece of his musical genius behind him for the world to savour.

Jacko was a trinity of genius. The singer, dancer and songwriter created a new mantra for modern day entertainment. He was simply magic, living ahead of his times even before the sound and visual effects of the present digital age.

Heal the world
His trademark elaborate, stop-on-a-dime dance moves spiced with the sensual soprano influenced generations of musicians. His whispery, high-pitched speaking voice was a unique gift that he employed to good effect in thrilling his fans.

The face mask epitomized his lows. The multiple plastic surgeries and his vitiligo illness transformed the hitherto masculine and athletic black man to a wispy, pale-faced, almost noseless figure. Call it the curse of celebrity if you may but Michael Jackson will remain an icon who also had the human heart. He also knew how to sell a good cause, as with his celebrity-packed "We Are the World" video in 1985 to raise money for starving people in Ethiopia.

Death remain the painful universal equalizer. The grim reaper has robbed the world of one of the planet's finest artiste of his generation. Fare thee well MJ and thanks for ROCKING US ALL when you lived.

Here is some information Kumekucha came across that may interest you: Swine Flu Scare In Nairobi?Kumekucha

And you really can’t blame them because we still have IDPs suffering like you can never imagine and scores of other pressing issues which the political class has no time or inclination to address.

Still, what is now slowly emerging is the deadly PNU game plan to get their man into State house at all costs when the next elections come (I have always said here that I don’t believe it will wait until 2012).

At the centre of that game plan is one Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta.

It is no accident that this son of Jomo “land grabber” Kenyatta has been in the news in recent weeks like never before. First there was the 10 billion jigsaw puzzle in the supplementary budget (believe what you want but that cash is long gone. I reveal exactly where it has gone in my raw notes to be published tomorrow.)

It is no secret that Uhuru drinks too much (and he drinks the kind of stuff that burns your throat all the way down) and the pressure has been telling for anybody who looks at press photographs carefully. My information is that the political class (which includes Baba Moi) have heaped all their hopes on Jomo’s son. In other words Jomo Junior goes down and the whole political class goes down with him. I will elaborate this point further in my later posts to come. But an interesting aside here is that former president Daniel arap Moi has also been in the news a lot in recent weeks. This too is no accident. Moi is still smarting from the bitter defeat he suffered in the hands of Narc and Raila Odinga in 2002 and seems to have decided that a revenge victory is his sole life’s mission before he inevitably faces his maker like every man has to. His intricate plan to get Uhuru to State house is already in motion. It is a plan that seeks to incorporate all Rift Valley bigwigs (including William Ruto).

However what is most revealing about the next presidential race is that it is now abundantly clear that this will be the race for young candidates and anybody who will be over 50 will quickly find themselves irrelevant (and you can take that to the bank even if you are a die hard supporter of Kalonzo Musyoka and Raila Odinga). There are people here who have made an occupation out of labeling me a Raila stooge, but let me just say that I will never vote for Raila Odinga again but if truth be told, he was the legitimate winner of the disputed 2007 elections. The double standards and sheer hypocrisy that western countries often display just irks me because European countries have asked for a repeat of the presidential polls in Iran while nobody dared to suggest the same for Kenya in early 2008. Not because the tribal animosity and emotions were not healed but simply because some very powerful nations decided that they could not trust Raila Odinga to rule the strategically important Kenya. These same “powerful forces” have now thrown their weight behind Uhuru Kenyatta. More so after his maiden budget that appeared to “take care of the poor.” I get very amused when all manner of experts start to analyze the budget and make all kinds of projections. Does anybody ever bother to look at the levels of implementations of the previous budget before a new one is read? NEVER. To me the budget is just a political statement meant to achieve political objectives as funds are allocated to pay the big salaries of our horribly bloated coalition cabinet and to enable the rich and powerful to embezzle.

There is another very interesting development in the coming presidential race. All the candidates who have so far shown clear indications of running (except one) are all from the house of Mumbi. They are Uhuru, Martha Karua and at least two prominent well known persons from the civil society. This would have been excellent news because we would have managed to de-tribalize the race for State house which would be ideal just now, so soon after the 2007 debacle. However in view of what happened in 2007 and President Kibaki’s persistent policies, it is highly unlikely that any campaign (no matter how ingenious) will be able to successfully sell a Kikuyu to the electorate. This is the reason why the PNU think tank is working on winning the presidency by a slim margin. One of the reasons why the party is pushing for more provinces based on population. If Central province has two provinces and a Kikuyu province is hived out of Rift Valley, then it will make it much easier for a candidate like Uhuru to get the required 5 provinces a presidential candidate needs to be declared winner.

The odd man out of the presidential candidates list so far is of course agriculture minister William Ruto whose game of political chess has climbed a notch or three higher in the last 2 years. Still, Ruto’s bid will fail for many reasons, perhaps the most important being the happenings of January 2008.

Notice that all names mentioned are below the age of 50.
Whatever happens, Kenyans can be sure of one thing—and that is that this one will be the most interesting presidential race Africa has ever seen.
