  The cameras routinely catch him ill at ease, grimacing in the tropical sun as he sits slumped in an uncomfortable chair looking into the great void beyond the photographers and pretending to listen to yet another boring speech by yet another windbag politician. The photographers have grown so adept at capturing his various moods that it would seem to some that the whole point of snapping a picture of the president these days is to freeze him in one of those clumsy poses.

  A picture is a story, and one can safely infer from these media images of the president that he is detached from the reality of his surroundings. And not just the immediate, literal reality around him at public events, but the encompassing reality of the country at large -- the stalled projects, the underestimated threat from the anarchy in Somalia, the rising unemployment among the young, the long list of the nation's unfulfilled dreams.

  I like my new friends,they always seem to make me smile even when the sky seems gloomy :)
  
  Too bad in a week most have to get back to their busy lifestyles and jobs so we cant spend a whole day chatting
  I like the debates especially that of young men and sugar mummies.Just when i think its done and we've all decided that dating someone who's old enough to be your parent aint cool, someone comes up with a new advantage everyday and the debate has been on for the last two weeks.
  
  Kinda reminds me of last week when some older guy sat next to me in a mat and tried chatting me up.Am trying to look busy and he drops the 'i hope hakuna jam' line and am thinking...hello its lunchtime!!Thika road is like a super highway then especially if you're moving out of town!!so he drops random vibe and am looking out of the window and nodding every now and then so he doesnt repeat the stories thinking i hadnt heard.Finally i get bored and pullout my phone to get on facebook and when he noticed i wasnt listening he also chucked his phone and dropped the driest line 'unaeza nisaidia ku check missed call?!'.Jeeze luise!!hadnt i just seen him scrolling through that same list as he was telling me to show him how to?!Noting he was already on the missed calls list i told him i didnt know how to since my phone is different and immediately the dude starts demonstrating how to.I asked why he was asking for help in the first place and he said he didnt know how to check what time the calls were made and asked if i could help with that too.I didnt even bother answering!!
  A few minutes later he asks for my name and i act like i hadnt heard so he started calling me 'shiro'.Ok...guys that whole vibe of calling a chic you dont jua by a random name hoping you guessed right aint even funny!!i lenga and dude goes like 'shiro unaweza nionesha ku save number kwa phone?unaeweza tumia tu number yako vile nimekuwa nikijaribu kuzisave lakini huwa sioni hizo number nikizitafuta baadaye'.I just stared at him and told him am not shiro na pia mimi sijui kusave number and the whole time am talking he's busy pretending to be writting something on his phone.I turned to look behind and noticed the guys sitted in back sit were giving me funny looks and my suspicions were confirmed.The dude just wanted to make it look like i was giving him my number to save face and make it seem like his game was on point.The rest of the journey was spent trying to ignore invitations to lunch and finally i just had to tell him to quit bugging me since i aint into old folk.Then he started on that vibe about how much he makes blah blah blah and he jua's us college girls like young 'boys' who cant treat us etc!!what the hell!!who said i wanted money and even if i did couldnt i just ask my parents if i was broke for whatever i wanted.Besides if i couldnt afford it then it's probably not worth it!!i hate that such men think they can have anything just cos they have some loose pocket change.I told him what i had was enough and he should stop bugging me since in the first place i chose to get into a 'hewa' matatu cos i wanted to listen to the music and not some boring vibe.And then he asks me,what type of music that is cos he really likes it and wanted to buy the album so he could watch it at home!*Roll eyes @ poor attempt to sound hip n relevant* did he seriously think that would jump start a conversation?!luckily someone chucked from the mat and i got to switch sits.unfortunately when i got to our stage and alighted he shouted 'bye shiro *waving his phone* wacha ni i'save kabla ifutike' and i was left trying to duck while the crowd at the stage must have wondered who that was and why babu ya mtu was saying goodbye to me!!Eeeeeewww!!
  Yuck!!ul never see me with a jibaba with kitu 8 kids who are even older than me cos it just seems creepy and disgusting too!!Afadhali nibaki maskini wa mungu if that's the only means :)
  
  Ps. If i ever meet any of my friends with a +58 year old baba like that ,it'll be the day i die of laughter.

  David Obuya stakes a claim for a recall

  David Obuya has given the Kenyan selectors plenty to think about after the squad's recent practice match played over 3 days that ended yesterday. Playing for an XI lead by Collins Obuya vs a Maurice Ouma skippered XI, he contributed 132 in the first innings, the only century of the match and added a further 70 odd runs in the second.
  
  In a game that ended in a draw, the pitch seemed to favour the batsmen with most bowlers only picking up one or two wickets each. Of the bowlers, Peter Ongondo was reported to be the most incisive, while several batsmen spent quality time in the middle.
  
  Other than David Obuya, others who found good touch were Jimmy Kamande (70* in the first innings), Kennedy Otieno 67* in the second innings, youngster Peter Kituku who made a half century and both Collins Obuya and Steve Tikolo who chipped in with quickfire 30s and 40s in the second innings.

  Arusha Tales... weddings, older men and booze

  weekend headlines...
  so i'm sure i mentioned it before, after landing in nairobi saturday night, i flew out to arusha on sunday for a wedding (it was an S.D.A service) . my mom's collegue was tying the knot and our presence was apparently compulsory. i dragged my friend S with. if i was going down, i was gonna take some one with me.
  the service was terriblly long, despite us arriving 45 minutes late. it was in a half-constructed church, no windows, there was a killer breeze, i was wearing a white top, let's just say it got abit nipply. yes, nipply. after the killer service and the wholel bridal party walking out in slow motion, (there must have been 52 of them!), we finally get to go to the reception.

  we are seated. still wondering when the food will be served. the company is good though. my friend S, three of my mom's collegues, and then another guy, i should call him man, another man joins us. he used to work with mom, a friend of the groom. i first met him when i was twelve. here i am nine years later thinking... hmmmm... he looks nice. this is some one i grew up calling uncle nani*. he was funny, and cool and he smelled good, a successful pilot. then, (insert horror flick sound track) he shows us pictures of his kids! i'm closer to them in age than i am to him! i figure he must be atleast thirty-eight. but still very well groomed and interesting etc, etc. i spent the rest of the reception trying not to pay too much attention to him, which was kind of difficult because he was sitting next to me.
  
  ...they guy must be around fourty. he's old enough to be my dad... but he's so goodlooking... when are we gonna get to eat... where the hell is the booze...
  
  those were my thoughts throughout the reception.
  we finally got to eat. it turns out there was no booze, it was so sad, the whole choir from the church was there so we kinda figured. we each had like five to six bottles of bavaria* which was actually pretty frothy so it was easier to pretend that it was apple flavoured beer.
  
  uncle nani was making me so nervous. the last ime i felt this way around a guy... i couldn't even remember. i was trying to act cool, praying i don't spill my drink, hoping my lustfull thoughts don't show on my face. constanly checking to see if my mom had caught on. looking back, it was hilarious!!! we talked about his work, my varsity life, his kids, when we would finally get to eat, etc etc.
  needless to say, we finally got lunch at around 6.00 pm.

  after a few SoCoLimes* at the hotel's bar, we decided to go to the evening party. my mom found ou that it was open bar. all the churhc folk had gone home. it was time to party!
  we get there, there was an empty seat next to uncle nani. of course i sat there. it turns out the evening party was another reception. for the couple's cooler friends. the food was much better, so was the music, the bride was showing cleavage, when they slow danced, the groom was very openly feeling on his wife's booty...
  back to uncle nani, he was already tipsy, i wanted to see if i could get him to run his mouth, maybe he was interested as well. you can't blame a girl for being hopefull... it was fun. we talked, drank and laughed, we danced a little, you know, just normal wedding stuff.

  unlce nani and i were still talking. by now i was certain that i had a full blown crush on this man. i didn't want to do anything with him, given the wife and kids/ he's my mom's friend factor, but just liking him was exciting enough. you know what they say about forbidden fruit...
  
  ...maybe it's because i grew up without a dad... maybe it's because he's just a really cool, good looking, successful guy... maybe the wedding is really boring and he's a good distraction...
  
  either way, i had to stop myself from thinking to far. it was exciting!!! i had thought i was numb for the longest time, but uncle nani had single handedly managed to confuse me. *giggle*
  
  what is the worst thing a person can do to put you off? i'm sure what happened next wasn't the worst, but it came pretty close, given the circumstances.
  a tipsy uncle nani started lecturing me about God. not spirituality and living a holistic life... no. about God and Jesus and the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. me and S couldn't believe it. and he went on for about half an hour.
  DUDE!!! WHAT THE HELL???
  needless to say my attraction towards him vanished within the first five minutes of the lecture.
