Kenya Cricket: U13 selected results

I had hoped to post full scorecards, but the formatting ability has eluded, so here are the summaries of Kenya's matches in the U13 regional tournament:

Match 1:
Kenya beat Tanzania by 11 runs
Toss - Tza, elected to field.
MOM Joseph Owino
Kenya 3/108 (Joseph Owino 30*, Tanzil Sheikh 20*, Joseph Mwanji 1/11)
Tanzania 5/97 (Abbas Zabahussin 19, Nassoro Zeharo 18, Kevan Dodhia 2/9)

Match 2:
Kenya lost to Uganda by 7 wickets
Toss - Ken, elected to bat
MOM Isaac Abdullahah (Uga)
Kenya 8/83 (Tanzil Sheikh 23, Krutarth Rao 19*, Deep Haria 2/6, Simon Ssesazi 2/22)
Uganda 3/85 (Lawrence Ssempija 32*, Isaac Abdullahah 33, Atharva Tembekhar 1/14)

Match 4:
Kenya v Tanzania - abandoned due to rain
Kenya 3/51 (Dhawal Modi 17, Abbas Zabeehussin 1/5)

Match 5:
Kenya lost to Uganda by 8 wickets
Toss: Ken - elected to bat
MOM Simon Ayella (Uga)
Kenya 6/62 (Dhawal Modi 29, Tanzil Sheikh 19, Simon Ayella 2/13)
Uganda 2/65 (Bid Jaineel 32*, Gordon Everard 1/10, Artharva Tembekhar 1/12)

Overall, Kenya's batting produced too many ducks, though there are some positives to be taken from the above, notably Joseph Owino's innings in the first match, Arthava Tembekhar chipping in with wickets each game and Dhawal Modi featuring in 2 good innings. The stand out player for Kenya however was the one player who really produced in every match: Tanzil Sheikh. Sad to see that the private schools produced little help despite their better facilities and training. Hopefully this will change in future squads and future years with this group of players.Become a fan of Kenya Cricket.com on facebook: [www.facebook.com]

Kikuyumoja's realm: The Angiological Weekend

Just when I thought that nothing could stop us from a well-deserved vacation, visiting some dear friends in London – a journey we had anticipated for a long time – parts of my body revolted and sent me to hospital on Sato evening.

Diagnosis: a spontaneous venous thrombosis on the left leg, partly inherited from my family, partly due to sítting too much time in front of my computer.

So I spent the best part of the week enjoying this view:

..or taking snapshots like this one:

This is actually where I was waiting for gastroscopy where this woman next to me asked the doctor for colonoscopy, telling him that she had too much anal intercourcse lately. Well….

Staying in hospital is ok – at least you’re provided with free food and I didn’t have to pay for anything. Now compare that with hospitals in Kenya and you know what’s better about Germany. Really, the health care system may be far from perfect, but it is better than in other countries.

Eventually, I was given these tights which are really *tight* but also help putting some external pressure on the veins.

The irony is that they’re selling this colour as flesh tone. It’s the moment where your mind goes: WTF?!?!?! U guys can’t be siriiiaaaas?!

But they are. These tights also available in black or white – and I will order a black pair asap. Will have to wear these for at least 6 months, probably even longer. Yes, I know, many women have been wearing such special tights for the last 30 years or so, but I am a man and just not used to such special underwear. It could be worse.

One reason for blogging all this is to remind you not to spend too much time seated (this also happens during long flights, btw!) – or else a thrombosis is what may follow. They do all kind of tests with you to exclude a tumor (which may be another cause for a thrombosis) and that ain’t nice.

The other reason is that the Angiological department at the Uniklinik Frankfurt shares the same building with the Infectological dept – where all HIV-patients are treated. You end sharing the place with other patients who are about 1/2 of my weight and who probably won’t survive another month. Makes you appreciate life.

Another positive aspect of all this is that your body is checked upside down – so it’s good to know (that) the rest is all well!

Mauri Yambo: Maria Puente's Art of Writing on Facebook or Twitter

Maria Puente bemoans the all-too-common habit of writing on Facebook and Twitter as though art, the art of writing, does not matter in those fora. She complains, "the modern status update is not always compelling reading." I cannot but agree with her entirely. In a recent twitter update I remarked that "content is the real King of Kongo." She puts it much more elegantly. Clearly, "Feeding the cat" or "Watching TV" is no one's king -- though, Puente concedes:

"To be fair, even great diarists of the past had bad days: Samuel Pepys, the Englishman whose journals clarified a big chunk of the 17th century for historians, sometimes had nothing more imaginative to say than: And so to bed."

Yet she wants something more: "Surely we could do better 350 years later?", she remarks.

Approvingly, she quotes Debbie Weil, author of The Corporate Blogging Book, who notes:

"Great blogging is great writing, and it turns out great Twittering is great writing — it's the haiku form of blogging."

And she, Puente, insists: "Funny, clever and sassy updates and tweets stand out because they are the exception. Boring, vapid or just TMI — too much information — updates often dominate in cyberspace."

Further Reading:
1.
Last Monday, University of Nairobi students walked out of an examination hall in protest against a compulsory, end-of-semester HIV/Aids examination paper which, they argued, was not only sub-standard but also contained the answers that they were supposed to struggle to give.

That was truly a strange incident. Equally bizarre was the revelation that the paper had a multiple-choice format, which is supposed to be contrary to University policy -- though some of us have been rooting, unsuccessfully, for the sanctioning of that format as an option in specific undergraduate settings (particularly courses with very large student numbers). Morehttp://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping
