Reading about the newest feature in Gmail, called “Inbox Preview” from Google has made me quite happy today. You see, it’s got a lot to do with the “If it works in Africa, it will work anywhere” theory that I expounded upon first here and here.

“Inbox Preview is now launched in Gmail Labs – while Gmail is loading, a simple, static preview of your inbox with your ten most recent messages is displayed. This will allow users like myself to be productive even before Gmail has completed loading.”

A perfect example

Basically, Google realized what slow connections were doing to people’s interaction with their email accounts. So, they sent in a team of engineers to work in cyber cafes in Ethiopia to test out where the bottlenecks were and to come up with a solution.

So, besides building in Africa to serve just African audiences with web specific solutions, we can see solutions coming from Africa that also serve the rest of the world. On top of that you can also use our continent as a testing and R&D grounds for new or improved services.

Was at MC Africa for less than 20 minutes within which time, I realized that my Camera was low on charge thus could not take enough photos.I also got extremely bored as I found the battle in its early stages.

Unlike at WAPI where there was freedom of expression, club clique only cliqued with silence. They had even appointed a prefect, Lorna Irungu who kept hashing everyone even when a good emcee was on stage. Ah! kwani am in 4th form(I got suspended for 2 weeks in high school coz of noise making) so I decided to wait for someone else's review.

This is from a great fan of KP and fellow Poet.
"Was at MC Africa, Point Blank won..but a young cat called Caligraph ..only 17 years old in form four gave him the fight of his life. They tried to force Kimya to the final but the crowd prevailed.
My honest assessment, it was the officials choice to have either Kimya or Point Blank to win...they did not contend with Caligraph...
He outdid Point Blank..Point Blank actually choked but won coz of Caligraph's age...
He has a tough task ahead at the EmCee Africa finals if his performance sato nite is anything to go by...
As for the judges...Nazizi should not have been among the judges...forget gender balance or anything...
I think a DJ ..a hip hop cat like DJ Adrian would be better laced...honestly..there is no link between NAZIZI and hip hop...she cuts a confused figure..somewhere between a dancehall artist, kapukist and rapper...
Abbas...his ties with Kimya..too close for comfort...maybe some old hip hop head like Kama
Just my thoughts on EmCee Africa..." Thanks M.K for this review.
African Hip Hop also covered the event with the subject EMCEE AFRIKA KENYA..WAS WEAK!!

He has the INSTITUTIONAL MEMORY demanded of an infant anti-corruption authority like KACC. He knows the shadowy Anglo Leasing ghosts inside out. He waxes Shakespearean like no Kenyan justice. And above all else he acts and thinks in the right first language.

Why would you give 2.5m monthly salary to a novice who will get overwhelmed with such a wage? Not even the most active president Kibaki can handle that much money.

Justice Rignera has no equal in Kenya’s judicial circles. In one fell swoop, the dragon slayer chopped the limbs of all legal scoundrels with his radical surgery.

Only Ringera with his unique hindsight correctly read the hitherto infant official mood in advance. Ahead of his time and before other Kenyans, he helped weed out unpleasant judicial faces. Hail Aaron.

Ringera is incorruptible thanks to his unique pay cheque. he has not betrayed his principal briefs in any way. And who else would have the guts and temerity to demand more powers to prosecute fraudsters?

Right tongue
Kenyans must learn to give credit where due. Ringera saved us international embarrassment by defending our sovereignty when one John Githogo took his phantom plays to the global gallery.

Ringera is a proven true patriot who sings no partisan tune. he deserves a second stint at the helm of KACC to complete the reign of banishing Anglo Leasing ghosts lest. Any other nosy choice will only succeed in flinging the loaded cupboard wide open. Please re-appoint Ringera and let the worms rot inside the drawers.Kumekucha

As usual, this year’s Kenya budget reading will not miss a dose of ‘sin tax’ for smokers and beer lovers. How effective these ‘sin taxes’ are is still a matter of contention, but this Mercatus Centre policy paper discourages them. In summary it says:

- Sin taxes are the result of anticompetitive behavior rather than true public-interest concerns. Most of them are used by industry leaders to fight back at their competitors (EABL, Keroche, tax stamps)
- Sin taxes are not used for their intended purpose and consumer of the taxes product don’t have control over the raised funds (which ends up funding political agendas anyway)
- The weight of sin taxes fall disproportionately on the poor
- Consumers of sin products are usually not responsive to increase in prices and may only substitute the product for a lethal alternative – defeating the objective
- Then there is the issue of same products from neighboring countries finding their way into the market albeit illegally.
- The effectiveness of ‘sin tax’ is thus trivial and a total failure (it even feeds immorality!)

No more Zain (Again!)

Zain Group is reported to be looking to sell its African unit, Celtel International. It’s said that Zain has been approached with a USD12 billion deal to sell Celtel to an unnamed French company. Zain has also received inquiries from firms in India and China. And still on Zain, its Zap money transfer service has been approved in Uganda and will be now be operational across East Africa.

Another first from KCB

KCB has announced a tender for an internet acquiring gateway, which according to @moseskemibaro is an indication that the bank would be offering an e-commece services platform locally. Following the passing of the ICT bill into law earlier this year e-commerce is now easier in Kenya and KCB may be the first to launch it. (ok let me not indulge more lest I become a ‘corporate cheerer’)

strawBELLY (BEauty ako reaLLY down)

The other day we decided to have a few cold ones at Twamasha (hehehe – it seems this twitter talk is messing me up). Oh, you need to follow me here ----> [twitter.com] sawa? Anyway, so we decide to have a few cold ones on a Sunday evening at Tamasha as the jazz there is really tight! It’s me, Henny and ChairmanM. Having been recently through the dryer with Ching Ching Part 1, I am totally engrossed in my Tusker and the music. On that day, ChairmanM is surprisingly nil by mouth, very unlike him. I suspect his estranged wife is still giving him problems. Henny however is on the prowl! Now, it’s a known fact that whenever a hunter wanders off into the forest in search of prey, it pays to carry along with him a dead dik-dik. That way, if his efforts are fruitless, all he needs to do is to unleash his knife and start sawing away at the dik-dik, his meal guaranteed. Henny always refuses to heed this advice, 99.9999% of the time to his peril.

Pewa Mdongera (PM)

So there’s that ka-doorway from the inside of Tamasha to the outside section with the tum-small car park. The car park where the watchie behaves like those air-hostesses of first class. The ones who swing down the aisle amidst longing looks from economy passengers. They fika the boundary of first class and economy, look at economy guys like miserable offenders and then contemptuously draw the curtain shut, nzwwwiiiiiiip, condemning u to the misery of your economy seat. Yup, that ka-watchie does the same with the gate. The guy infront of you is opened for wide so that his AMG can glide into the parking. As u follow behind with your ka-battered Toyota, nzwwwiiiip, gate shut “Boss, kumejaa.” Aaaaargh!!!

But back to the point. The doorway between the inside and the outside area slash carpark is called Pewa Mdongera (PM) cause the chicks looking for loaded guys like to pose around there. Sure enough theres a PM over there looking sizzling wuwi! Sizzle ma-Nizzle!! Five foot 7ish, silky smooth skin, light colour, flat belly readily apparent from tight t-shirt, curvy backside in stark contrast to aforesaid belly. Curves emphasized more by the tight fitting jeans and high heels. Wuwi hata me I saw her, died and went into a state of nirvana!

Jisunde ChapChap (JCC)

So Henny does the usual. Approaches the gal and tells her ChairmanM would like to talk to her but is kinda shy. PM looks at ChairmanM those ones of “Kwani what kind of coward sends his pal?”. She then looks at Henny those ones of “At least this one is man enough to step up to me himself”. Henny is ndani and soon has the digits.

Two weeks later Im asking Henny how things are going and he’s like he calls her sometimes lakini she’s always giving excuses. Another two weeks later, same story. So Im like “Gimme the digits” and he obliges. So I call her up manwar-style and we have an interesting 15min convo. Seems gals like a guy who is interested but not really interested. Down but not really down. Cant understand them but hey, she agrees to a date.

Saidieko Straw (SS)

So the gal shows up at…. Wait for it…. The Republic aka Kichinjio LOL! I see she’s brought back-up but after a few minutes chit-chat backup is dismissed. Hmmm, seems things will be woop woof! But…. She orders for a Tusker, a glass and a straw. Surely, at my ka-local, in full view of kila-mtu-everyone! Halafu, that ka-hairstyle. Tum-lines with a weird side weave thingy/patch/thingabob. Looks like a giant housefly buzzing next to her ear. Infact, I see some cobwebs huko near the ceiling and almost want to grab her by the legs and use the thingy to clean the webs…

We are chit-chatting and having a ball but my eyes keep getting drawn to that hair-thingy, in some hypnotic Indian fakir “you-are-under-my-spell” kind of way. Aaargh!

Needless to say, the night ends abruptly that day.

Nakumatt Approach (NA)

So I get a call from the chick a few days later: “Milo swty. How u? Imagine ur not a gentleman” So Im wondering wassup but not info forthcoming. Eventually she’s like: “By the way, I just finished my shopping at Nakumatt. Si u come pay my bill?” I inform her that Im fine given my Uchumi shopping was done the day before. She hangs up the phone:))
