  "Rwanda's failure to show up - for whatever reason - and some poor weather, put a dampener on the first two days of the cricinfo-touted Africa Cricket Association (ACA) East Africa Under-13 boys' competition in Nakuru, Kenya.
  Rwanda had been flagged up as one of the successes of the African development programme/Cricket without borders enterprise; so their absence, if only to gauge the team's progress, was a disappointment.
  Matches were being played at Rift Valley Sports Club and Greensteds School, south of Nakuru.
  Results: Day One - Kenya 108 f 3, Tanzania 96 f 7; Kenya 93, Uganda 94 f 7. Day Two - Tanzania 92, Uganda 93 f 6; Tanzania v Kenya (rained off)."

  Once again Kenya have been outplayed by Uganda at development level. This cannot continue to be ignored as we cannot rely on our current seniors for ever. Cricket Kenya must act ASAP to return Kenya to the top of the pile at regional development level. If Uganda continue to get the wood over us as juniors, it is only a matter of time before that filters through to the full national side.
  
  A shame that neith Rwanda or Burundi were able to make it. for the benefit of the game in the whole region, it is important that these smaller teams do get to play and gain experience at this level.
  
  On a positive note, it is good to see the facilities in the Rift Valley being used and also that Kenya had all 3 cricketing regions represented in the squad. These are things CK must build on to get the development back on track so we win at all levels again.

  Overseas players continue to impress

  Seren Waters, Ragheb Aga and Abeed Janmohamed have continued on with their recent form in England.
  
  Waters put in a good allround performance in Weybridge's drawn match against Malden Wanderers in the Surrey Premier League Competition. Waters chipped in with 2/27 off 6.5 overs with the ball, before backing it up with the bat, scoring a brisk 90 off just 95 balls.
  
  In the previous week, Waters captain, Abeed Janmohamed pulled Weybridge out of a poor position of 83/6 against Wimbledon Cricket Club with a determined innings of 56. Earlier in the day, Waters had looked in good form, racing to 21 off just 20 balls, before falling to a misjudged run. Unfortunately their efforts werent enough as Weybridge went down by 6 wickets.
  
  Finally, Ragheb Aga has continued his recent run of wicket taking for the Eastbourne Cricket Club in the Sussex Premier League Competition taking 3/47 off 14 overs in his teams loss to Cuckfield Cricket Club.

  Coast Cricket Association website up

  finally some good news in terms of one of our Associations promoting themselves and cricket on the net. Coast Cricket Association have launched their website.
  
  So far it looks great - the most recent tournament details are up and it is nice and easy to navigate around. Hopefully it lasts longer than the original CCA blog. Good to see the CCA are active and looking to do the right thing by promoting the game. They had a couple of representatives in the U13 squad and the grounds are looking like they will be ready for the U19 WC next year. Keep up the good work CCA.

  Take the Kids Home First, Dammit

  I had a beautiful ride to Karen the other day.
  
  When you are new in a city as expansive as Nairobi, sometimes you learn a few things the hard way. A friend asked me to visit her in the Karen area. Well, since we hadn't seen each other for long I said I'd be glad to. She asked me if I knew how to get to that side of town and I said Of course I did. But since I wasn't sure I could drive there, I decided I'd catch a Number 24.
  
  That was a mistake.
  
  Turns out Number 24 goes out on a major excursion. When I told one of those dudes who hangs at the door as the bus cruises along where I would get off, he looked at me strangely, then asked, "Why did you take a 24?"
  
  "Won't it take me to Karen?" I asked.
  
  "Yes, but you should have gone through Langata."
  
  Deng!
  
  So I was in for a longer ride than I planned. And it didn't help that just fifteen minutes into the ride my friend started calling...wondering why it was taking so long. "Is it the rains?" she demanded.
  
  I said, "Nope."
  
  "Then what's the matter?"
  
  The matter was...I was in the wrong bus, but being there made me see something that completely messed up the rest of my evening. As our bus came to a stop at one of those places where they empty folks and fill up, I saw a bevvy of excited school kids ready to jump in and head home. And by then it had started drizzling. I looked into the bus and could tell that there wasn't enough room for all of them. Was I going to have to get out of the bus to let in two more?
  
  Man, imagine my surprise when the bus stopped, let out two passengers, then started off without the kids. Not a single one. Instead of the kids, the dude who hangs at the door allowed in two women and a hefty man! To my further dismay, nobody in the bus seemed to mind this sorry picture.
  
  I rushed to the dude who hangs at the door and asked him to stop the bus. "The kids," I said.
  
  "Wachana nao."
  
  Leave the kids?
  
  I couldn't take this. I told him to let four kids in and I'd pay the adult rate for them. To my sweet surprise, other parents in the bus took a child each and before long our bus was filled with happy children heading home to their parents and to do their homework.
  
  In spite of the touching ending of that drama, I was left with many questions on my mind. How can it be that we would let parents ride home ahead of their children? I understand the right of the matatus to maximize profits, but are those profits worth our telling the young, helpless Kenyans that we don't give a damn about them? Can we treat the kids like they don't matter and still wonder why they turn out so angry and disillusioned in this society?
  
  Someone needs to act, to work out a policy that forces the matatus to take the children home ahead of their parents. Until then, my fellow Kenyans, if you are in a matatu and a child is about to be left behind because he/she won't pay as an adult, step in and pay for that child.

  I have to admit. I loooooove getting complimented. Love it. We all crave attention. I spend time and cash getting my hair and nails did. You're Damn right i want you to tell me how good i look!
  
  But...
  There's guys who've hit on me and left me feeling insulted. The "hell would have long frozen over before i get with you" type of dude.
  You know...
  -the window cleaner at the grocery store with the torn overalls
  -the taxi driver. I don't even mean taxi cab, the matatu driver
  -the security guys on campus
  -the unattractive, close to a midget, drunk guy at the party
  -the guy who screwed up, (not screwed), i mean, really screwed up, one of your friends
  -the guy from the power company
  etc, etc.
  
  I know, i'm pleasant to look at but yuck. For the above, to try and hola, and be so crude about it... Talking about how my ass looks, or coming to my house. Are you freakin kidding me??? Of course i'm not going to give you my number! You're the freakin campus security guy! If i wanted to feel safe i'd have gone for a Jack Bauer impersonater. What, the most you've got is a flashlight and a walkie talkie? Ugh...
  
  I'm not trying to be a bitch or whatever. You can smile or say hello, i can be polite. I'll smile and say hey back. But don't be acting like you can get this. Okay? mr.window cleaner? With your bucket of soapy water... It's just offending.
  
  I'm having a stress filled couple of days, i'm halfway through finals, moving house this week, etc, etc. And You, mr. Campus Security Guy, are not helping!!!

  occasionally, i like to go back to D.O.G.: retrospective and read entries from my formative years. i started using a blogging format in 2001, but have been online journaling since 1998 (1998! i just had to say that out loud and repeat that… insane.).

  it’s strange seeing yourself grow through your blog entries; i found entries where i was at my highest weight, how i became addicted to the sims (my cousin’s dad bought the game for them then he gave me a $100 giftcard to target… now i’m starting to wonder how my target addiction started…). what remarked me this time around reading the through the years 2002 to 2005 was how depressed i was. every other entry, i was moody, listless, withdrawn. i started to wonder if i could truly be depressed, and for all those years, considering i’m feeling pretty craptastic these days. i took the random webMD quiz and i am severely depressed; i don’t know why, but i find it laughable. not the quiz, but the fact that i am depressed, but i don’t feel it really. anyways, i won’t make this entry about depression and i’m really trying refrain myself from bringing up these feelings on here over and over and over (every other blog entry, anyone…).

  i would probably also diagnose myself with asperger’s syndrome; i’m so socially awkward, i wonder how i even got this far. the problem isn’t conversation; i’m able to start them pretty well, and with strangers, but i can’t keep it going. i never know what to say next and usually i will fall into awkward silence with a professor to even my good friends. but the thing with my friends is they know that i tend to do that, so our silences tend to be more comfortable than awkward. knowing all this, i will avoid human contact if necessary. people classify me as a quiet person, but i used to be so withdrawn and painfully quiet that my parents actually put me in a program to boost my self-esteem. anyways, i’m rambling…

  i’m not complaining or i would hope i don’t sound like i’m complaining. i’m 29 and my life has been pretty decent so far, i can’t complain. everybody has problems, issues, but we can work with them, through them and succeed in life. it’s easy to change in hindsight, hard to change in the present. word up.

  Of Poisoned Pyramid Wealth and Drug Money

  Our mad rush to join the wealthy class has crashed head on with core values of humanity. The rich are using their corruptly acquired wealth even to impoverish more Kenyans. A look at victims of the pyramid schemes will disabuse you of the imagination that only the less-informed and villagers are vulnerable.
  
  Despite the inviting hooks to destitution, you will find it damn difficult to stop a middle class Kenyan flashing his/her her Sacco loan into the drain of these pata potea schemes. The bait is often so sweet after few pioneers are handsomely rewarded with interests generated from new members. No wonder our televangelists are doing so well in this industry.
  
  Before you know it the pyramid is speedily inverted and saturation at the base leaves it with only one option, crumbling down. You cannot fault Kenyans for their penchant to make a killing with any prey in sight.
  
  The problem is that the prey is often deadly poisonous leaving trail of corpses from those who rush to sample its juicy steak. Just ask Equity bank investors who are yet to get they refunds after the artificially-engineered over subscription. But that is a story for another day.
  
  Enter the PAINFUL tale of numerous young Kenyan women having a date with the hangman in China. These enterprising Dubai-bound businesswomen are now pleading innocent when the bubble bust in their faces together with their plastic fortunes. They must have known the high risk that comes with their REAL BUSINESS.
  
  Hawking fake sympathy
  After numerous trips abroad, it smacks of shameless naivety to claim that you were caught with heroin while innocently helping a business associate carry a bag. Leaves you wondering what would they say and tick when checking online whether they packed their own bags. But again we are Kenyans who are synonymous with obtuse vices that define genesis of our prosperity - the end justifies the means.
  
  There is no substitute for honesty. The aura of FRAUD thriving among us will only succeed in extinguishing any trace of credibility hitherto associated with Kenya. HELL FOR LEATHER appears to be our motto. Woe unto you who fail to smell the opportunity miles away. A smart Kenyan will stealthily grab it leaving you wallowing in poverty.
  
  Prosperity built on vice or its derivatives is unsustainable. It maybe human to sympathize with these mothers languishing in Chinese jails. But aware of their original sin in drug pushing and the zombies their heinous actions manufacture amongst us, you cannot be sure to hawk a fake sympathy.
  
  What a sense of déjà vu seeing the MOST SUCCESSFUL only turn to recognize and appreciate the collective value of their less industrious peers when the chips are down and out. Damn values for they bring no food to the Kenyan table.Kumekucha

  Water scarcity in Africa

  If one thought things could not go from bad to worse for Africans then am afraid one was grossly mistaken. The news coming out on world environmental day (June 5th 2009) painted a bleak if not scary picture for millions of Africans leave below the Sahara. Without the resources and human capacity required to meet the threat of global warming African lands are threatened with desertification and their species with extinction.

  Already the Mount Kilimajaro glaciers are gone and it looks like the Mount Kenya glaciers will be gone in the next 10 years or so. These are East Africa’s primary sources of water that feed into the numerous parks creating the low lying savannahs and environment for African wildlife to survive.

  Unless swift and desicive action is taken then we could also theoretically posit that the African is in very grave danger.

  However it is not only Africans who will face the music. 2000 scientists report that the Permafrost “ice cap” that covers much of Siberia is about to melt and once that occurs trillions of tonnes of methane gas will seep into the atmostphere creating an immediate and exponential growth in size in the carbon layer that is heating up the earth creating all sorts of unimaginable catastrophe. It is at that point folks we can all kiss ourselves goodbye.
