  Just came across this announcement in my in-box. Might be of interest. KARA stands for the Kenya Alliance of Residents Association - their website is quite informative.

  what has become of what we knew,
  moments made memories so precious, the few,
  the amount of love did depreciate,
  life long searching for my soul mate,
  I knew of you then, know of you now,
  ever since you took the vow,
  the rings of engagement,
  or is it engaged by the ring,
  whatever the reason there is no real meaning.
  
  I close my eyes, I see your face,
  I smell your fragrance,
  your warm embrace.
  I open my eyes, you are out of sight,
  distant stranger in the night.
  I close my ears, I hear you whispering my name,
  kiss upon me, mixing pleasure with pain.
  I open my ears, the sound of silence,
  nothing,
  words you don’t say.
  I close my heart, I feel your hands,
  and I love you for making me feel this way.
  I open my heart, all has escaped,
  the moments made memories,
  all seem to fade.

  Thoughts, Adrift

  There is nothing sweet or silent about my thoughts. They are as a cacophony of thunderous emotion which boom against the brick walls of hindrance and despondency that I've built in my wage against an uncertain destiny.
  
  Am I bound for the immortality that is akin to rapacious craving in my terminable coil? Or am I bound for dust and the ash that I am namesake? A forgotten form that will dwell in the tide of longing that for eons has swallowed whole those that do not ever manage more than to live.
  
  In my mind, I shine brighter than the nova sun. In reality, very few look beyond the sullen shell that carries inside it my luminous core.

  Summer hiatus

  Am going on a hiatus during which i hope to find some sort of direction.When i started this blog id hoped to write about my experiences as an undergrad but soon realized as a day bug there wasnt really much to write about since i spent very little time on campus.I guess thats how it ended up turning into my diary,the first time ive had one since ive never really been one to write ''faithfully''
  I finally cleared but graduation is still pending.My undergrad days may also not be over since i could get credits and do a 2nd degree rather than masters...maybe then i might have enough campus vibe since il definately not be a day bug...that last sem was too sweet and i came to learn what the hype about living on and around campus is all about.You havent been to uni,or atleast you havent experienced what it's all about if you're still living at home and you miss out on the opportunity to learn how to be independent.
  Il still be posting every once in a while especially since am about to embark on a car denting mission when i start my driving lessons.I know the insurance people may not feel sufficiently philanthropic to cover the paint jobs in my trail but they have to realise a girl has to make people recognize am behind the wheels of a lorry :).Truthfully,i wish i didnt have to undergo the torture and thats why i have been postponing the dl for so long.I love cars but would rather be driven around rather than be the one on the wheel cos it's kinda boring!!
  So anyways,il write when i can and will still check on my fav bloggers to see what y'all been up to every once in a while

  National Lie: Reconciliation Using Division

  Playing politics with dead bodies must be condemned by any sane human being worth his/her blood and flesh. But not in Kenya where leaders engage in shameless charades for political mileage.
  
  Toxic leadership continues to suffocate Kenya living her citizens gasping for air. So Kibaki was in Eldoret presiding over the burial of Kiambaa victims almost 20 months since their deaths. His partisan entourage didn’t do the occasion and Kenya any good.
  
  So here we go again continuing to fortify the foundation of our national lies. The shameless leadership has no qualms tribalising death. But again maybe in their twisted world they can speak first language with the dead. And to their obtuse gratification their apologists will come bandying lofty slogans like reconciliation while the thinly-veiled and cheap political expediency oozes from every orifice of their anatomy.
  
  Wailing louder than bereaved
  What is more, we have successfully exported the bigotry across the borders. No wonder Museveni can afford the luxury of effortlessly annexing Kenya as many original bigots cheer him on when he skillfully strokes their ethnic egos Kenyan style.
  
  The non mutating truth be told, no life must be lost in vain. But to derive cheap political capital out of a TRAGEDY by painting others as more aggrieved is no means to either author or nurture reconciliation. The latent bravado and brinkmanship negates any trace of cohesion present thereof.
  
  No contempt is more painful than that tears streaming from crocodile's eyes. The only thing that matters to the present rulers is the MEGA DEALS they make over carcass Kenya. To them all else is noise and rattling that must be ignored and strangulated with all available might.
  
  Kibaki and his entourage may have come for the burial with all the state power. But fools would entertain the notion of legislating good neighbourliness. Even Saitoti missed the boat by a whole river in enumerating the number of police stations.
  
  And our people never run dry of selective amnesia and bravado. Predictably, our national penchant to mask wounds as it festers underneath we will see many chanting and condemning those who chose to absent themselves from the burial lest they inflamed an already raging ethnic inferno.
  
  Stroking ethnic flames
  The sooner we garner the courage to look our problems straight in the eye the better. Only then can we retrace when the DEVIL invaded our national homestead. Otherwise we risk continuing the destructive journey of building a firm pyramid of deception which will soon come crashing down leaving no place to hide even for the looters.
  
  While nobody ever suffered constipation from a full course menu of delicious coloured lies, only clothing ourselves with nothing but the truth will help cover our collective national nudity. All else are circular ego trips to oblivion.Kumekucha

  The Obamas host a Poetry and Jazz evening featuring James Earl Jones, Esperanza Spalding and Lin - Manuel

  You do remember last year just after Barrack Obama won the presidency, he did on 'Meet the Press' - a show on CNBC, promise that the White house would open up to jazz and classical artists as well as poets, well it was no bluff.
  Well, He did it!
  Tuesday night (12th May) saw the Obamas host a night of poetry reading and the spoken word featuring James Earl Jones, Esperanza Spalding and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The night also included musical interludes, modern poetry and excerpts from Shakespeare.
  
  According to the Obamas, it is exactly the thrill of diversity that prompted them to host this as well as a series of other arts events in the mansion. Invited to the microphone this time were eight poets and musicians including the actor James Earl Jones, the writers Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, the jazz bassist among others.
  
  The evening of spoken word, jazz and a sprinkling of hip hop was designed to stress a new era of accessibility at the White House.The evening, which was also attended by the president's daughters Sasha, 8, and Malia, 10, was inspired by the "poetry slams", or spoken word competitions, that are popular in the First Family's hometown of Chicago.
  
  Mr Obama began the event by stating: "We're here tonight not just to enjoy the works of these artists, but also to highlight the importance of the arts in our life and in our nation."
  
  Meanwhile in Kenya, only the children finalists of the Music and Drama festivals get to entertain Kibaki and Lucy(who wouldn't give a rats ***) at their state house residence. And you still wonder why the only mention Kenyan Poets get is at the back pages of newspapers in the past tense.

  Poem: A Wordsmith

  It is said that change is the only constant in life
  Like I, a wordsmith who is still learning how to use the fire in her tongue like fire flies or young dragons
  I, a smith who sometimes let words burn out while others spew out undone
  If only my words could be the sun chasing the moon into hiding
  And be the only constant in this ever changing life
  Like a compass, my words would constantly indicate the four poles, the direction that our society is taking.
  
  If only my words could show their real colors like a bow of rain
  For all the discerning eyes to see beneath the words and pick out all the hues
  For there are times that certain vowels and consonants do not want to be the constant cast in my play of words.
  And at certain times they beg to be hidden behind others in a show of defiance against misinterpretation, misrepresentation, misquote
  
  Words to poets are like toys to a toddler
  My crawling words now walk, though sometimes unsteadily
  I have painfully learnt to let go the pet and venture into dark alleys
  Now I let words bind my mind holding my tongue in a trance
  I no longer have control over my words
  For they can read my thoughts
  And my thoughts can no longer hide like shadows
  From the light.
