» Kikuyumoja's realm Nachdem mir gestern der Inhalt einer 30 GB Partition auf einer älteren, externen Festplatte - einfach mal eben so - ins Datennirwana aberauscht ist, kann ich jetzt für WinXP ein gutes Datenrettungsprogramm empfehlen, das wirklich hilft: GetDataBack von Runtime Software, dass es jeweils in einer FAT und NTFS Version gibt.
Auf der 60 GB Festplatte hatte ich seit ca. einem Jahr diverse Publikationen aus dem Bereich Water & Sanitation ausgelagert, größtenteils also PDFs und Office Dateien sowie ein paar Videos, die man zwar zu 70% wiederbeschaffen könnte (= von CDs zusammenkopieren und ausm Inet herunterladen), was aber auch viel Arbeit bedeuten würde.
Leider hatte ich die Festplatte in einem billigen USB Gehäuse untergebracht, dass ich vor ca. drei Jahren bei eBay gleich 2x erstanden hatte und dessen Fehlfunktion ich immer auf einen defekten Controller in meinem alten Rechner geschoben hatte. Jedenfalls scheint da bei einem Schreibvorgang die Stromzufuhr unterbrochen worden zu sein, so dass das “Inhaltsverzeichnis” der Festplatte nicht mehr neu geschrieben worden konnte.
Für Laien: Wie bei einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit, hat auch eine Festplatte ein Art Inhaltsverzeichnis, in dem genau steht, an welcher Stelle die jeweilige Information zu finden ist. Wenn man dieses Inhaltsverzeichnis herausreißt, findet man die gewünschte Information nur noch dann, wenn man das Buch Seite für Seite durchliest und ein neues Inhaltsverzeichnis anlegt.
Ein Datenrettungsprogramm muss also in der Lage sein, trotz aller Vorgaben stur die Festplatte abzugrasen und passiv auszulesen, was dort steht. Genau das schafft dieses GetDataBack.
Nachdem ich nämlich fünf verschiedene Programme ausprobiert und schon fast aufgegeben hatte und GetDataBack erst gar nicht starten wollte (defekter Bootsektor auf der Festplatte), hatte ich es dann später doch nochmal versucht und GetDataBack tatsächlich dazu überreden können, die Festplatte abzugrasen. Nach ca. 3-4 Stunden war es dann soweit - es wurden die alten Daten angezeigt, die man sich dann über einen Viewer anschauen konnte. Leider werden Doc Dateien dabei verfälscht angezeigt - erst nach der (kostenpflichtigen!) Wiederherstellung sahen die meisten (nicht alle) Dateien wieder normal aus.
Vorteil also: es funktioniert tatsächlich, wenn auch nur zu ca. 95% (bei mir zumindest);
Nachteil: GetDataBack ist richtig teuer und die Vorschau auf die rekonstruierten Daten hatte mich eher abgeschreckt. Die Datenrettung kostet dabei mehr als eine Festplatte - eine professionelle Datenrettung jedoch mind. 10x so viel.
Schön wäre es, so ein Programm auch noch als Freeware und für Linux Distributionen zu bekommen. TestDisk ist auch nett, aber hatte mir leider nix gebracht.
Mit einem der diversen Datenschreddertools habe ich es mir danach nicht nehmen lassen, die alte Festplatte komplett mit “Yesu ndiye mkombozi wa maisha yangu” zu überschreiben (statt Nullen und Einsen) - was als Kunst und dreifache Codierung zu verstehen ist (~ geheime Botschaft auf alten Festplatten versteckt, die für jeden einzelnen eine andere Bedeutung hat).
Falls hier jemand Ahnung von Filesystems hat, würde ich mich über eine Aufklärung darüber freuen, welches FS stabil ist und für sich selbst läuft, d.h., bei Verwendung auf externen Festplatten nicht so anfällig ist. Bisher hatte ich dafür immer Fat32 (wg parallel installiertem Ubuntu) verwendet und alle Partitionen (außer WinXP Boot Partition) über 32GB Größe (WinNt/2k/Xp Limit) mit GParted eingerichtet. Thx!

What Was Your Role In The Mayhem, Mr President?
» You Missed This Water Minister Charity Ngilu has a long history and reputation for speaking her mind and not caring too much about the consequences.
Now she is asking a very simple but direct question. What was the role of President Mwai Kibaki in the post election violence? Now before the tribalists come out heaving and breathing fire, let us pause for a moment of quiet sober and non-partisan reflection.
Kenyans are unanimous in agreeing that there should be no amnesty and that all perpetrators of post election violence should face the full force of the law. That is fine. But please remember that already many innocent Kenyans are languishing in jail for mostly being at the wrong place at the wrong time. And this was mostly because they happened to be poor. Quite a number of the guilty ones are already dead and some are already answering to their heinous acts in the courts. And all this is going on when none of the people right at the centre of triggering the whole mess are roaming the country scot free. Some of these people are now loudly asking for amnesty.

Folks please let us learn how to be a little sensitive. Imagine what those Kenyans who suffered greatly as a result of the skirmishes feel when they hear the word “amnesty.” Those whose nothers. Sisters, wives and girl friends were brutually raped. Those whose loved ones were killed as they watched. Have mercy. Don’t you think that the call for amnesty is making them live through the nightmare all over again?
We said in this blog very early on that election violence perpetrators should either all be prosecuted or all given amnesty. In other words there should not be any selective justice. Especially if that justice is meted out Kenya-style where there is a very different way of handling the poor while the rich mined and political class can never seem to be touched by the same law.
Now the truth of the matter is that the whole post-election violence horrors were triggered off by a stolen election. So justice must start where the problem started surely. What makes this whole thing even sadder is the fact that those close to the president and indeed the president himself were fully briefed (if we are to believe the NSIS) on the consequences of election theft. But still they went ahead and to make matters worse, without taking the necessary precautions to limit the loss of human life. Indeed there is evidence to suggest that certain arms of the security forces deliberately went out to kill, the objective being to scare demonstrators and other would-be trouble makers from escalating the violence. Well this plan fell flat on its’ face and what saddens me the most is the fact that one of the reasons why this happened was that those making decisions had no idea at all where the masses of Kenya are coming from and the kind of suffering going on within the borders of our beautiful country just because of impunity and bad politics.
So Mr President, even as you suddenly shift gears about this amnesty thing, please tell us, what was your role in the post election violence. Plenty of innocent blood belonging to Kenyans is crying out from the ground for an answer to that question.
Again I ask, what was your role Mr President?

So... Waki, Wako and Mutahi Went Into A Bar...
» What An African Woman Thinks First, in response to the discussion this past week about the Waki Report, I do not support blanket amnesty, especially for those who used positions of leadership to incite to violence such as we witnessed all over the country in the dark and dreary time. I believe justice be done, and be seen to be done, but, to borrow words from Martha Karua here: not “retributive justice” but “restorative justice”.
I really believe that for true healing to take place, and for us to move on from where we are to where we want to be as a nation: we must demonstrate in multiple ways and on multiple fronts that we understand the correlation between action and consequence.
One of my biggest grievances these past few years about Kenyan politics has been that our leaders continue to act with impunity because nobody in the end makes them pay for their actions. That disconnect has been the bane of our Kenyan existence, to put it mildly. I say “no more”. Something must give. Someday it must stop. Now is as good a time as any.
Second, I do not support the conviction of any individual based on anything less than a critical mass of evidence. So, if as Justice Wako says, there’s not enough evidence to meet the “threshold of truth,” well then, somebody open an X-file already because the truth is out there. And we want to know the truth.
We cannot afford to punish the innocent, but we must not let the guilty go free. There is, in the end, too much at stake. We must strike a note that signals that the time has come to move on as a nation, and to do so, justice must be served, without partiality.
Third, I’m not comfortable at all with the language that Mutahi Ngunyi is using contra Kofi Annan. I agree that Kofi Annan is a politician. But, when we invited him into our process at the beginning of the year, we made the successful restoration of our nationhood a part of his political legacy. Also, what short memories we have if we have already began to dismiss this man offhand as “beginning to sound like a retired old man looking for relevance”?
Plus, I think Mutahi belabours a tired point: of course Waki could be wrong. The question is, is he? And if he is, what is the truth? Somebody should go out there and get it. There can be only a very tenuous connection between the possibility that Waki is wrong and the conclusion that Mutahi Ngunyi seems to be drawing which is to dismiss the whole thing offhand and get on with life. Excuuuse me? We’ve all heard, I trust, of the baby and the bathwater. I put it to you, Mutahi, that there can be no going on with business, really, until this matter is resolved.It's my window, but I don't own the view. -
I Calibrate, (While Hoping, Soon, to Celebrate)
» What An African Woman Thinks The things that need to be said ought to be said. Better said, I have decided, before November the 4th.
In view of recent developments in the political arena in the US, I’ve calibrated my view of the average American into more positive territory. I now concede that I may have been too quick to judge the more extreme rhetoric on race and creed from certain parts of the US as mainstream.
No more.
I do not hesitate to offer credit where I believe credit is due. That both national polls and the polls of various battleground states are where they are at this point in the process gives me to understand that I’ve been unfair, to a large extent, to the average American on account of a few individuals who’ve been off the normal curve.
I will not go so far as to say that racism is no longer or will no longer be an issue in America.
But I do think it has suffered a major blow. Hopefully, the injuries sustained from said blow will send it into ICU, and someday, in the not so distant future, it will die an unremarkable and lonely death, in a dark and dingy room.
It turns out that it served the world well for Martin Luther King to have had a dream.
I salute the average American citizen today.
