» Kenyan Pundit - Tech scene buzzing in Africa (and yes not just in South Africa). Particularly happy to see the Skunkworks event getting underway…this is an outcome from Barcamp Nairobi and other forums where local developers have been complaining about the fact that the government and local companies don’t support local software developers…now the govt & industry have demonstrating that they are willing to engage and I hope the developers step up (although notice was late). An aside: Would love to know if there’s any action in West Africa.

Products I want to see from Safaricom, Zain, Orange
» Startups in Kenya Ah, the uninhibited joy of wishful thinking. After Safaricom introduced Voice SMS - a product that I had dreamed of since I first used a mobile phone - I started thinking "hey, perhaps I can voice some of my other fanciful mobile phone product ideas, and someone may just take notice"? Well, here goes ... the following list are some of the next products I'd like to see from the trio of Safaricom, Zain and Orange.- An SMS autoresponder. Everytime you get an SMS you can optionally send back a response like "Thanks for your SMS I'll get back to you", or "Sorry I'm not able to respond to your SMS right now but I'll do so as soon as I'm able" It would be quite useful, especially when your phone is off/out of reach/on divert.
- The ability to convert unused airtime back to cash (although I know this makes absolutely no financial sense to these companies, it would be really cool!)
- Free voicemail depositing.
- Mobile Number Porting, just let me use my Safaricom number on the network I prefer whether its Zain or Orange.
- An SMS autoresponder. Concert: 'Europe-Kenya Unity in Diversity' @ Uhuru Park, 4th October 2008
» Kenyanpoet A Free Open Air Concert dubbed - Ulaya na Kenya Pamoja katika Wingi(Europe - Kenya Unity in Diversity) will be on at the Uhuru Park grounds on Saturday 4th Oct from 12pm - 6pm. Entry is free.

The Cut …even for Old Women
» You Missed This What is our country coming to?
September 15, 2008 started off as a normal day for Consolata Kathambi. But it was never to end pleasantly. The claws of a nightmare were just lurking somewhere in the shadows.
This 35 year-old mother of three was at her home in Meru District (in Kenya) when she was informed of an impromptu visit from some female members of her village. She was shaken a bit for this was a strange visit. There had to be something the matter.
When she got to the door to let them in, she nearly fainted when she beheld the numbers. They were more than she had “bargained” for.
They cut to the chase and informed her that they had come to “transform” her to a “real” woman. Before she could digest the gist of that statement, they continued to say that she, Consolata, was not a real woman for she was not “circumcised”.
This hit her like a thunderbolt. She tried to piece this information together in her mind, but it did not add up. Her husband had accepted her as she was, so what were these women here to do? This whole thing just did not make sense.
Even then, female circumcision, in her community, is not for old women but for girls (up to a certain age group).
Things went so fast for her comprehension. Before she could shout Jack Robinson, she was being dragged across the compound. She could not see where they were taking her for she was blindfolded. Her shouting and kicking did not help matters.
Her hands and legs were held firmly. When they got to the “opportune” place, they stopped and tied her hands securely. Next, her legs were spread wide apart. They were not bluffing, they meant serious business.
She was circumcised by this mob of ‘fire and brimstone breathers’. She experienced something that she had all along hoped and believed that she had escaped. But then, tribal edicts had caught up with her and she was stripped to the last piece of clothing.
My Two Cents: Female circumcision is cruel to women and we should do everything in our power to do away with it. More and more people should join in this war (of terror!)

» The Benin Epilogue Part I: Africa-Ready for Business If Thursday's US vice presidential debate is anyway to measure Joe Biden and Sarah Palins's competence, then it clearly missed the mark.
The standards were at an all time low given that all they had to do was to avoid making serious blunders. It was acting par excellence. We know Joe Biden as a barrel of gaffes, but on Thursday all he had to do was keep the lid tightly sealed lest he starts spinning another one of his many "tales" that portray him as a loose cannon.
On the other hand, Sarah Palin's job was easy - keep to the script prepared by the McCain team but throw in one or two "Joe six packs" while portraying the image of a hockey mom. She succeeded in being gaffe free but was short on substance. (READ THE TRANSCRIPT HERE)

Nokia opens sub-Saharan research center in Nairobi
» REBECCA WANJIKU'S BLOG Nokia, the leading mobile phone manufacturer has opened the sub-Saharan research centre in Nairobi
The Nokia Research Africa (NoRa) is the first in Africa and will carry out study into Nokia products and services across the continent, said Jussi Impio, NoRa team leader. The centre tackle issues related to entrepreneurship, energy management, healthcare, education, transportation, social media, arts and culture.
NoRa will work closely with African universities and Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to develop prototypes of devices that are suited for the African market, and to study the telecommunications trends in the various countries.
The center is targeting mobile phone users and the youth in order to design products and services that are relevant and add value to users, said Impio. Mobile communication plays a significant role in the socio-economic fabric in the continent.
The region has majority of the people in the low income bracket, poor infrastructure, low access to information, and a variety of social problems, most of which can be tackled through the use of mobile phones, added Impio.
Nokia which claims it manufactures a million mobile phones handsets everyday will focus on issues of pricing of mobile phones and the inclusion of features that are relevant to the region.
NoRa has carefully selected its partners to ensure that the research methods and resulting technologies are relevant and connect with the communities involved, he added.
“NoRa will work with NGO’s and institutions of higher learning because these institutions have an understanding and knowledge of the research methods to be applied in communities,” Impio explained.
NoRa is currently undertaking a study in Huruma estate, a lower income estate about 10 kilometers from the city center. Through partnership with the slum code programme, NoRa hopes to understand the dynamics of the informal music industry in the urban slum communities.

Yet Again Friday Is Here!
» My part of the world....... I know it's been a minute and a half since I blogged. This and work have taken up alot of my time. The storm in Texas really affected the petrol supply over here. Most gas stations have been out of gas and those that have a somewhat more reliable supply run out in record time due to people queuing to buy as much gas as they can. It made me realise how much people here depend on their cars to get around. It was so bad in some areas that people were lining up for hours to fill up. Well on my part it wasn't so bad seeing as which being Kenyan I know how to deal with shortages, I made sure I cut down my trips to the bare minimum. Also instead of lining up at my local gas station what I did was go to sleep and then I woke at 4 am and went to fill my car and carried a 4 gallon gas can with me which I filled up too. For some reason I forgot the gas can in my trunk and drove to work with it. Let's just say with the combination of the hot car interior and the petrol fumes that had seeped into the car, I think I became high by the time I got home from work.
Anyway onto a pet peeve that I have had for sometime but never expressed. I'm tired of black people out here saying they are "Indian" no not Asia Indian but Native American Indian. I was in College with this girl who said it was wrong to call her African American since she had Indian in her lineage. No she didn't look multiracial at all nor did she have colored eyes or anything. She had brown skin and brown eyes just like the rest of us. The Census bureau in the States says only about 10% or so of black people can claim Native American ancestry. But the way black folk out here happily claim it you would think it's more like 70%! Why can't people learn to accept who they are?! It's just as sad as how "good hair" for black people basically means hair that is straight and long like white folks' hair; I'm sorry but when and where black people evolved that kind of hair had no use at all, good hair my ass! Just wait till I hear someone say that.....
And in Dilbert land aka my job, I have two 2 hour meetings today. The first being a staff meeting. I remember nodding off during the last one since the staff handbook was being read out to us with certain sections being explained. Anyone who knows me is well aware that I don't fare well in meetings that go past 1 hour. The second meeting of the day which is with three other people and since I'm the person with the most knowledge, I'm expected to participate. What's sad though is that one of the people there is one if these people who always have to be involved in everything and thinks they know it all even when they are wrong so I'm going to have to put up with alot of mouth breathing and stupid questions. I remember one day during a meeting I looked at this person and imagined myself stepping behind them and slapping them on the back of the head for talking too much trash. Needless to say I started smiling and when asked this was my weak answer, "I'm simply looking forward to the challenge."
That is the fun that is my life.
Oh and lest I forget, the economy here is going down the drain! Most powerful country in the World my ass........
