Listening to Mwai Kibaki yesterday, any alert Kenyan would have concluded that we are in very serious trouble indeed. The “duly elected president” was at his vintage best (for those who know him well). Firstly he pulled away Prof Sam Ongeri from the Anan talks a clear indication that launching the free secondary school education program was more important than those talks which so many Kenyans are hanging all their hopes on ( pole sana). The whole idea is to prop up his government and emphasize business as usual (which is what every middle class and wealthy Kenyan is desperate for, for mostly selfish reasons). Secondly Mwai Kibaki also talked at length about resettling displaced persons and the government helping them to rebuild their houses. I do not for one minute support the gruesome murder and chaos that has been going on, but what do you think the other side felt? Those with land issues high on their agenda. The president was behaving as if all that has happened means nothing. Then there was another even clearer sign that all was not well. Annan came out of the talks yesterday looking a very tired and frustrated man. He asked the press to leave him alone and then took a long walk along Kenyatta Avenue with his bodyguards in tow. Later in the evening, he issued a statement announcing a news blackout on the talks and a last dash 48 to 72 hours to reach an agreement of sorts. It seems everybody has forgotten the strange events of last Friday when a breakthrough was announced and then when everybody went to Harambee house nothing happened. Read more

I am currently in the process of changing my WordPress template, so if things do not look the way they are supposed to be - please stay tuned for an update.
Although I am sure I will just spend 2-3 hours searching for a modifyabool template, only to realize later on that it isn’t compatible to (the biggest nightmare) MSIE 6.x and/or give up after some time as none of them will be convincing enough.
I’d like to have a simple template with lots of whitespace, some neat gimmicks and a clear structure that will enable a comprehensive navigation and provide some space for individual banners and my ever exploding linklist / blogroll /eChakula thingy…another font would also be nice and some more pixel design. Also, it needs to load a bit faster. Actually, loading time is the biggest issue. Hence the need for whitespace & a clean structure.
EDIT: ….the iPhone! Mzeecedric just informed me about the maximum width for an iPhone screen. Hellooohoo?!
EDIT2: OK! CASE DISMISSED! Due to this which convinced me. And given that the current Sirius theme does provide all these requirements, why change? But I will sure continue searching for another, better theme :-)

This one is not exactly AfriGadget, more like an AfriToy, but we love the story nonetheless. The video reporter Ruud Elmendorp visited the small village of Tabaaka, near Kakamega, in western province Kenya. Below is a video showing the master carvers at work, creating soapstone figures of The Simpsons characters. The carvings are available for online purchase through the CraftVillage website. Please click on the image below to view the video.

Al-Jazeera also covered the story last year, focusing on the economic boost of the Simpsons movie on the village, as it saw an increase in the number of orders for the carvings. It is the confluence of popular culture and African handicraft that we particularly enjoyed when it came to this story. If we had our way we would have soapstone carvings of Strongbad! One day.
PS: AfriGadget will have a monthly feature on The World Technology Podcast, which you can subscribe to here. The first issue is now posted. Many thanks to Clark Boyd, the AfriGadget team is quite excited about this.

All the waiting about political breakthrough over our political was not worth the anxiety. Playing to the gallery and shameless media leaks throughout last weekend all but indicated the dead road we patronized as a nation. Ours is a country lacking in leadership and asking the scoundrels to measure up to any self-induced challenge is akin to selling winter cloaks in Garissa.
So Annan has given himself two days deadline to come with a solution? Well, you guess is as good as mine because the outcome is clear even before the principals take their seats. Kibaki never stole the elections with an intention to reneging on deceit or succumbing to international pressure. Hailing his free secondary program is a song sung better by his apologists.
Political sharks The opposition may have played it smart in pushing him to a corner by making indicative motions and intentions of concession. But honestly such games are only effective on people with conscience not a hoard of supremacists already swimming in rivers of blood from Kenyans. Like sharks these lot never gets enough of human blood .
From the word go the Annan-lead talks were never meant to take off as evident in Kibaki’s obstructive pronouncements of being the duly elected president. Kofi Annan must be having his shoulders aching sorely from the global responsibility thrust on him. He must be cleverly chatting a hand-washing (safe) exit route.
The REAL KENYAN ARMAGEDDON is viciously knocking at the door. Make no mistake, Kibaki will not barge an inch. Annan will consequently have no choice but leave in a huff (really disgusted and disappointed). His excuse will be going to seek more guidance from UN and AU. A national Armageddon has never a comprehensive rehearsal like ours.
Exporting bigotry Meanwhile the deception bandwagon has new passengers in the shape of a bunch of tribal jingoists masquerading under the banner of Kenyans abroad. These shameless Kenyans have exported their bigotry abroad. They are only fooling themselves by sending a VILLAGE memorandum that denigrate all OTHER Kenya's 41 tribes. These dimwits must be so naïve to waste their time in asking Gordon Brown to respect the laws of Kenya that are abused with absolute impunity by their ruling kinsmen.
Sir Edward Clay would provide Brown with a more detailed report on Kenya. And that is not brain-washing because the truth never mutates even among those who vomit on our collective shoes. A heap of lies and misinformation packaged as a petition only succeeds in unmasking the true face of serial liars. No damage is more devastating than self-destructive antics laced in virgin village bigotry that is left untouched by any trace of modernity.
The cheap smear campaign to paint Raila as unelectable fell flat on its face and Kenyans saw it for what it was – glossing over national rape and deception. Now roping in Ruto and crying foul with their teeth shamelessly biting into deception, these supremacists have gone global with their vice.
I am no doomsayer. But the truth remains that Kibaki is not annd was never interested in any peace or resolution of the present political crisis. How I wish I could be more optimistic. But I would hate blaming myself for being so naïve to the impending and beckoning Armageddon. May God save Kenya from herself.

In a profound state of highly spiritual consciousness; actually a few degrees below transfiguration, St. Augustine yelled, "Give me chastity but not yet!!". In the Kenyan quest for peace, the relevance of such hesitation is outstandingly evident. In unison, we scream, "Give us peace but not yet!!". First we want to see either Raila or Kibaki as president. No peace until our dead and displaced are appeased. Peace is only possible after ancestral land in the Rift Valley is returned to its rightful owners. We want peace but only under a new constitution. Peace is PNU. Peace is ODM.
In the meantime, anarchy ensues. Whereas some IDPs are living in conditions much better than their previous polythene Mungiki-taxed slum dwellings, most are trying not to get used to the daily Red Cross food rations; they realize resettlement in the slum means three or four meals of squalor per week. At this juncture, one cannot fathom the number of dead denied a proper and decent burial. Reality suggests that nondescript mass graves will continue dotting the Kenyan landscape until we find justice and peace…in that order. Only in Kenya can justice be the stumbling block to peace.
Like most, I want to believe that Kenya will rise up from the smoldering chaos with unbridled thirst to regain its composure. I hope that the weeks of mayhem be viewed as a serious case of democratic hiccup and nothing more. Mwangi and Atieno will grow up together in Eldoret, go to school in Kakamega, marry in Kiambu, settle in Mwingi and buy land in Kisumu. All the while, Kipruto will be living it up in Muranga as Kalonzo sells honey in Kitale without fear or intimidation. The continuity of that Kenyan lifestyle must be a priority. That we have lost everything is not an understatement. That we refuse to remain in the same status need not be an overstatement.
Folks, we must demand our lives back. I think we all agree that it is indeed unpatriotic to want a government based on the current constitution and institutions; the dismantling and reconstruction of both must be expeditious. We must appreciate that on our plate is an opportunity to change this country forever i.e. begin on a clean slate. Citizens from both sides of the political divide have been martyred, let their blood not have spilt in vain. Let us choose peace but first satisfy all its preconditions. Let us resolve all these issues to finality. There's no other way out of this quagmire. The question on why the Finance ministry is represented by one tribe can never be answered by the quip that they are all qualified. The question on why a particular tribe was targeted during the height of the skirmishes can never be answered by the quip that it was only political. Someone must pay for all the businesses and homes burnt and looted. The police must be explain why they killed demonstrators. Rift Valley militias must tell us who owns them. Mungiki must face justice. Kenya has changed folks. Let us embrace this change.
Kibaki and Raila must not raise up their jointed hands in a show of political peace while Kipchumba and Kimani are still squabbling about the validity of title deeds.

Rumors about Nyaga Stockbrokers have been making the rounds on MyStocks & Stocks Kenya for a while... Where there is smoke there is fire... Since Nyaga is a major player in the retail market, this adds fuel to the fire. It seems many customers want out of Nyaga with the beneficiaries being firms like Ngenye Kariuki & Co. The NSE is bailing NSB since a thuo-like debacle can only exacerbate the "bearish" situation on the NSE. I expect there will be a run on NSB but it will take longer to sort out compared to thuo coz NSB has a much larger/wider presence in Kenya. I am sure there is a buyer for the license e.g. CBA but just the license NOT the business. Renaissance & NIC Bank are after high-net worth clients. I think CBA is in the same league. Of course, there is Old Mutual but they face opposition from other brokers. In any case, they would not want the retail business either. Oh, well... what do you think?

I was trying to figure out why Michuki keeps telling Kibaki to give him the ministry of roads. Afterall, isn’t the ministry of internal security a more powerful post? A friend of mine suggested that maybe Michuki had been demoted because he may be too “polarizing” . Kibaki and Michuki are comrades in arms (together [...]

There is a risk involved in everything
Every time you share a smile
Every time you shed a tear
You are opening yourself up to hurt.
Some people tread slowly through life,
Avoiding the closeness risk brings,
Side-stepping the things they can’t understand
Turning away from those who care too much,
Those who care stay too long,
Those who hold too tightly.
There is never an easy way to love
You can not approach it cautiously
It will not wait for you to arm yourself.
It does not care if you turn away
It is everywhere, it is everything.
Love is the greatest of all risks.
It is not reliable, it is not cautious,
It is not sympathetic
It is unprejudiced and unmerciliess.
It strikes the strongest of mind,
And brings them to their knees in one blow.
Even in the best of times, love hurts.
It hurts to need, it hurts to belong,
It hurts to be the other part of someone else,
Without either of your consent.
But, from the moment it overtakes you,
It hurts worse to be all alone.
The risk of love never depletes;
It grows stronger and more dangerous with time.
But, it’s in the total surrender of all defense,
That we, no matter weak or strong,
No matter willing or captive,
No matter what, we truly experience love.
Despite the many things love is not,
Outweighing it all are the things that love is.
Love is surrender without a loss.
It is a gift without the cost.
It consumes your every thought & desire,
Every breath you take.
It is the fire that fuels you
To do more than pass through life;
It urges you, instead, to live.
No matter the outcome, having felt love,
You will never be the same.
It may scar your heart & soul
And Leave you only memories of forever.
Or, it may cause every day of your life
To feel like there is no need for tomorrow.
But, love is worth it. It is worth the risk…
For in all of life,
Love is truly the only risk worth taking.
