29th December 2007: 08h30 local time
With ECK seemingly unable to provide presidential results sub-totals, unmistakable tension and anxiety is building not just at KICC ECK centre but also around the country even as independent media tallying give provisional results as follows:
Raila Odinga: 3.974m Mwai Kibaki: 3,580m Kalonzo Musyoka: 535k
Both Raila and President Kibaki have not been seen in public since they voted on 27th December and the ECK has had to postpone announcement of the final presidential results several times - despite the fact that ECK Chairman Samuel Kivuitu has promised to announce final results by this morning 08h00 local time. The ECK press briefing centre is now full of weary and exhausted journalists and party agents, some of whom have been camping there for more than 36 hours. TV footage has caught some international journalist, unfortunate not to have relievers, sprawled across seats in deep sleep.
ECK Commissioners Muturi Kigano and Jack Tumwa were early this morning put to task by ODM representatives at KICC to explain how they are unable to announce results that were released by various polling stations two days ago although they have already released parliamentary and civic results from the same areas. Matters are not helped by the fact that withheld presidential results are from areas perceived to be PNU strongholds and ODM is alluding that some manipulation could be on going.
The PNU on its part is sensing presidential victory and its representatives have had a few hot exchange of words with ODM representatives at KICC. There is a tight security around KICC and the dreaded paramilitary GSU have ring-fenced the venue in anticipation of social unrest.
Unconfirmed reports going round Nairobi indicates that PNU are planning to hijack the ODM and the country with "a George Bush in Florida" or "a Yar Adua in Abuja", but ODM pentagon members are categorical that Kenya is not USA nor Nigeria. According to Musa Sirma, a former MP and member of ODM Presidential Campaign team, "the ECK should accept to take full responsibility of whatever happens as a result of their delay is announcing results that are already in the public domain and that barricading the KICC will not help matters."
ODM insiders have privately informed this blogger that 6 independent tallying centres commissioned by the party show that the ODM Presidential Candidate is enjoying a comfortable and unassailable lead against the incumbent Mwai Kibaki.
Meanwhile, parliamentary seats won by individual parties so far are as follows:
ODM: 91 PNU: 12 ODM-K: 12 KANU: 7 Safina: 3 Ford: 3 Narc: 3
More updates later. Over to you Chris.

The results of the election are quickly coming in and reports from around the country indicate very high turnouts. However, it still not clear to me exactly what inspired voters around the country. High turnouts are a traditional indicator that voters are passionate, that they are not apathetic, that they are involved and want to take charge of their destiny. I want to join with people around the country in their pride about this election, especially in the results on the parliamentary seats. I want to say we are a democratic people, that we have set an example for other third world countries, that all that is left is ensuring accountability, but was there any design to yesterday's vote, or were factors like tribe, manipulation and euphoria more important than an analysis of the candidates? The election results are still streaming in and Raila has taken what appears to be an unassailable lead though there are still those hopeful that there are another 3 or so million votes to be counted and these could turn the tables. But that is not what I want to write about. As most readers will recall, following the 2002 elections, there was this continuous talk of how much the Agikuyu and President Kibaki owed Raila for his triumph over Uhuru Kenyatta. This was repeated so many times it was taken as the truth, and forms part of the casus belli that led to the fallout between the two politicians and their followers. Read more from Kamale T.

He he he. 2007 couldn't have ended better. I'm so happy. Nay, jubilant. Kibaki took Kenyans for a ride, a long ride . And the jokers we elected to represent us in parliament got what they deserved. I don't blog politics but there is no way I'm going to let this pass. Kenyans have done us proud once again. The failure of the ninth parliament, the constitutional fiasco and the never ending corruption in the face of wide spread poverty across the country. Kazi iendelee. My foot! What kazi? We have poor road networks, free education in crumbling and dilapidated schools, high inflation, endemic corruption, and on and on. My prayer is that Raila will choose his team wisely. With a parliamentary majority there will be no need to compromise with thieving leaders. What's more, there will be no more tribal chieftains to hold him at ransom. With that, I would like to congratulate Raila Odinga and pledge my allegiance to the new president of the Republic of Kenya. Happy new year to all Kenyans. God bless Kenya.

Just one look at the election results pouring in from all corners of the country today and you would not be wrong if you came to the conclusion that the Kenyan voter decided to give smoking opium before elections a miss this year and instead went on one long overdue sober parliamentary cleaning spree Since when did the voters card become such a weapon of straight-forward vengeance? The electorate dispensed blind justice on overfed overcooked political goose, sparing none except those birds whose tribal strongholds could not fathom the idea of what life would be like for them without "mweshimiwa" and their development record These unfolding events of the past 36 hours days begs asking one question-was there a secret decision by Kenyans to make 2007 elections the new 2012 elections? Not only has there been an increase in the number of first-time women parliamentary aspirants, but it appears that the desire to replace many of the Lancaster House pre and post-independence names and faces is a reflection of the change Kenyans have been crying out and yearning for in their top-most leadership; public servants and officials who represent the hopes, wishes and aspirations of their constituents right down to a letter T I will be watching closely for signs of the revolution that i thought would take at least another 5 years to hit our Indian Ocean bordering shores-is "democracy" and the ever-elusive "development" finally here for East Africa's largest economy?

I have met a few MP's, watched several live debates in the last parliament, and lot's of TV over the last five years. What is shocking to me is how different an MP that you know is – almost a two-faced person who's a serious level-headed professional debater in private who schmoozes the private sector and donors in person, and yet gets on TV at a rally and talks like a Neanderthal, insulting opponents from far flung places around the country. The MP's in the outing parliament who impressed me (yet I don't know any of them personally ) - are people who were always in parliament, debating and active in legislative matters – these include Maoka Maore, Justin Muturi, Martha Karua, Njoki Ndungu, Wafula Wamunyinyi to name a few. Yet many of them will not be back next March. For every professional i.e banker, farmer, stockbroker, accountant, IT specialist or other professional like Jonathan Mueke who take a first time plunge to make a difference, there are other perennial candidates that they have to run against – and however Jonathan turns out, he's likely to be better than several other candidates who include folk like; Current MP's: best illustrated with quotes from Joseph Kamotho and Norman Nyagah who after losing party nominations and defecting to new parties - said I must be on the ballot and my constituents love me and I must reciprocate that by continuing to serve them. ex-MP who feel the cold of being out of parliament. But like a gambler the morning after a big-loss night out, they think they know what they did wrong, set about scraping resources to make another lucky run the next night at the casino of parliament. In real life, they still call themselves 'honorable,' watch their dwindling money, as they maintain political and social networks ready for a comeback. And if asked, they are always ready to deny that they are interested in returning to parliament, but the lure is too easy and they are a sure bit to be in the 'right party' come election time. Grey MP's: not Grey in age, but these are people who have some blemished reputations – running from dubious financial escapades at Kenya Posts & telecommunications, health care sector, Goldenberg, road construction, public service, collapsed banks, etc. – who go to parliament where they will work to influence the the Public Investments (PIC) or public accounts (PAC) committees (from within) who investigate 5 year old scandals. They are well funded, know how to play (dirty) tricks, and buy their way into cash hungry political parties - since going into politics after a scandal ridden period provides a re-birth of sorts that legitimizes someone who perhaps should be a defendant, not a 'honorable MP' And once a professional gets to parliament does it matter how they perform as legislators? Maore, Muturi, and Muriuki Karue (who introduced the game changing constituency development fund scheme in 2003) have been voted out of parliament by their constituents this year. The CDF was a good measure of how MP's handled public money as a measure of how an outgoing MP has performed, but I'm sure there are hardworking development minded MP's (e.g. Tuju) who will be voted out for reasons other than addressing and improving the welfare of their constituents. So by what measure, should we judge our parliamentarians? Many are judged by the handouts they give or how many constituents they can stuff into the bloated government workforce over the five years they are in office. It is wrong, but until the expectations of constituents change, we will remain stuck with the same old folks. Or, as the 2002 - 2007 period showed, you may vote in new cheetah's but they will be old hippos that the same constituents will happily vote out & cheer away five years later. Random post election questions - does a president who loses an election remain eligible for the handsome 2002 presidential retirement package if he remains in active politics? - how many bank loans are likely to be recalled or go bad, given the high number of MP's (likely to be 50%) thrown out by constituents this week?

As Kenya and the world anxiously await the final result of the presidential vote, the Orange Democractic Movement is smiling all the way to the 10th Parliament with members of the prestigious pentagon having been re-elected back to the august house. All but Joe Nyagah who lost to political rookie Mutava Musyimi. But this does not seem to stall the strong orange wave being seen countrywide.
Charity Kaluki Ngilu survived a strong ODM-K wave to emerge the winner while Raila, Mudavadi and Ruto registered landslide wins over their opponents. Ngilu's win is a strong statement to Kalonzo Musyoka and a prophecy of sorts by Ngilu herself who had promised weeping Ministry of Health workers that "she would be back" after she was sacked from cabinet by President Kibaki a few days after she endorsed the candidature of ODM's Raila Odinga.
Meanwhile Kibaki's allies outside the Mt. Kenya region continue to suffer the wrath of the electorate with eighteen of Kibaki's cabinet ministers having been voted out as at last count. Major PNU casualties within the Mt. Kenya region include Mutahi Kagwe, Njenga Karume and Daudi Mwiraria.

Former President Daniel arap Moi is either the political giraffe Jaramogi proclaimed him to be or a superlative selfish Kenyan who is determined to die with Kenya's independence party. Moi's unwarranted meddling into Kanu (and by extension Kenya's politics after retiring) has inadvertently sounded the party's death knell.
The angry Kenyan voters have beaten Moi twice. In 2002 they donated to him a piece of political embarrassment in a sounding defeat of his pet project Uhuru Kenyatta. And just when Moi erroneously thought he would recoup lost ground in his sunset days Kenyans in general and Kalenjins in particular have twisted the political knife by denying his son Gideon the Baringo Central seat.
So UK remains the chairman of a shell of a party with a rich history. Kalenjins made sure that any trace of Moi was wiped out of the political landscape. Very few people would have predicted the political demise on Total Man Biwott.
Moi's meddling eventually leaves Kenya politically the poor. With less than 10 MPs Kanu's epitaph is already engraved in golden letters. Add to this grim picture PNU's top guns kissing the political dust and you have Kenyan politics bereft of any meaningful parties save for the shaky ODMs.
Scoundrels never learn, or do they? Whatever they take voters for, the electors are surely miles ahead and will never shy from dishing out serial embarrassment. But behind all the motions lies the obtuse selfishness that our politicians are always very eager to rope us into while cleverly serving their own interests. Washindwe.

A new don is here folks with dinosaurs kissing their political seats goodbye as the new face of Kenyan politics graces our motherland. Kenyan voters have once again demostrated that they have no respect for cheap political peddlers.
Seeing Gabriel Musikari Kombo's forlon face after suffering a huge thrashing by one Alfred Sambu makes you wonder how fortunes can change in a twinkle of an eye. Joining Kombo in the political dust bin are VP Awori who suffered the wrath of moody voters of Funyula. Add to that pit Tuju, Kagwe, Nyachae, Kulundu, Kirwa, Sang and Munyao among others and you get a complete orbirtuary signed in golden letters.
And as these ex-lords nurse political wounds, a new breed representing the brand Kenya are smiling all the way to the August House. And the message is clear: deliver or wembe ni ule ule in five years time. Our pride and congratulation to Ababu, Kones, Kabando wa Kabando et al.
With proper brains and no shortermism, we don't care who becomes the president. Kenyans have shown the rest of the world that they are in a class of their own. We want our motherland back from the scoundrels.
Meanwhile we at Kumekucha start keeping tabs on the new political faces without fear of favour and the acidic sensoring will not spare any face. No amount of juveline swearing and sweating can deter Kenyans from realizing their dreams with eyes singularly trained on the ultimate prize: SUCCESS.

ODM's Raila Odinga is the MP-elect for Langata constituency and seemingly headed straight to the presidency of Kenya. Results just announced at Nyayo Stadium by the Langata ECK Returning Officer shows that Raila garnered 59,416 votes against his closest challenger Mr. Stanley Livondo of PNU who garnered 23,919 votes. Ms Stella Mbai of ODM-K emerged a distant third with 1342 votes. A large crowd of mostly Raila's supporters, including this blogger and some members of the ODM presidential campaign team , have kept vigil at the Nyayo Stadium tallying centre for the last 24 hours. There is a strong contingent of the dreaded paramilitary GSU and regular police providing security for the ECK returning officer and the various party agents. There was initial speculation locally and internationally that the ODM presidential candidate Raila Odinga would lose the parliamentary seat and therefore be lawfully disqualified from assuming the presidency which requires that the president must first be elected as an MP. Since the vote counting started last night, there has been anxiety considering that Raila is President Kibaki's leading challenger and that there has been allegations of massive voter importation into Langata principally to frustrate his presidential bid. Presidential results as at 16h45 local time show that Raila is steadily widening the gap as media tallying show Raila at 2.9m against Kibaki's 1.9m, while Kalonzo is trailing a distant third with 279,000 votes. Most ODM MP elect have already started arriving in Nairobi in readiness of what Pentagon member and Eldoret North MP-elect says is "the inauguration of our candidate as the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya." This blogger has not yet declared Raila the overall winner of the presidential poll, but all indications are that ODM will not only have a majority in the next parliament, it will most likely also be forming the next government. Meanwhile disturbing news emanating from Kisii say that former legislator Jimmy Angwenyi has shot dead one person and seriously injured two others in his rural constituency in post election violence. The results or despute, if any, are still unknown. More on this to follow.

Remember, respected political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi? This morning he did an obituary of the Kibaki presidency on NTV. Obviously this means that he believes that going by the results so far and the trends, Raila Odinga will emerge winner.
Quite strange coming from Ngunyi who after the referendum was one of President Kibaki’s main advisors. Some analysts suspect that this could be a case of sour grapes, because President Kibaki trashed advice from some of the best political minds in the country and stuck close to his family and golf buddies with no political experience like Joe Wanjui. In fact if he loses these elections many of these advisors will be vindicated.
Others agree wholeheartedly with Ngunyi’s view and see no way of Raila losing his widening lead on Kibaki. Raila supporters are even distributing SMS messages claiming that Peter Marangi has been hired to paint State House orange. Hat cheek!
P.S. Linah Chebii Kilimo despite her late “acrobatics” in the run up to the general elections (implying panic) appears to have made it back to parliament. The good news is that all indications are that the 10th parliament will have a record number of women legislators (and not only of the nominated kind).
Also significant is Mrs Kilimo’s party- Paul Kamlesh Pattni’s KENDA. A party that has a chance of gaining a high number of parliamentary seats. Which means that Mr Pattni (actually Hon Pattni) will see the inside of the 10th parliament even after losing the fierce battle for the Westlands seat which currently has Betty Tett disputing Fred Gumo votes over some very, very, suspicious results from one polling station which seems to have been fiddled around with. The two are the front runners for this parliamentary seat.
Other reports just in indicate that Daudi “Anglo Leasing” Mwiraria has lost. WOW!!! Stay tuned, Kenya’s angry voters are not done yet. If you have a weak heart I advice that you take a trip somewhere far from any access to news on Kenya and return after a week prepared for anything

Here are some shots i took yesterday at a few polling stations around Eldoret. It was so hot, but people braved the heat and queued in order to vote. By and large it went smoothly in some stations, though in the hospital ward, it was quite inefficient with lines snaking around the corner. Chaos have erupted in Kamkunji constituency after several ballot boxes were delivered into the tallying centre by police officers. Turn-out was very high in Kamkunji and the race appeared to be between ODM and PNU - with the latter heavily tipped to win. The vote tallying has been suspend as the ECK consults on what to do next. In Kajiado North, former Education Minister George Saitoti has had to run for dear life after voters stoned him and accused him of delivering "sealed empty ballot boxes" with the intention to swing the vote in his favour. Young Maasai moran have been pictured chanting war-cries and vehemently indicating that they will not accept rigged elections results. Saitoti has had to contend with fierce competition from preacher turned politician Moses Ole Sakuda. Vote counting and tallying has been suspended indefinitely. Meanwhile other significant loses are: Kibwezi's Kalembe Ndile, Cherangany's Kipruto Arap Kirwa and Kikuyu's Paul Muite. A total of 14 cabinet ministers have suffered heavy loses in the election - dealing President Kibaki's re-election a serious dent. Read more here. As the election results continue to trickle in at a pace that most impatient Kenyans find to be too slow (but which is attributed to a record turn out in polling stations countrywide) some clear patterns are beginning to emerge.
Nicholas Biwott is out of parliament for the first time since the late 70s. Gideon Moi has also lost in Baringo Central. Other giants who have been felled so far include Njenga Karume, Mukhisa Kituyi, Moody Awori, George Saitoti, Simeon Nyachae, Musikari Kombo, and Mutahi Kagwe.
What I earlier referred to as the angry Kenyan voters is about to be played out before our very eyes in the next few hours as more election results begin to trickle in.
In my book Biwott’s exit is very good news but this good news has almost been wiped out by the entry into parliament of a man called Ephrahim Maina as the new legislator for Mathira. This gentleman was once called a cowboy contractor of the notorious Kirinyaga Construction. A man accused of grand corruption in the ministry of Roads and also one of the chief financiers of President Kibaki’s presidential campaign in 2002. (Need I say more?)
Early in 2006 I made the mistake in my analysis of saying here that retired President Moi would be a major force to reckon with in the Rift Valley. One of our readers in the Rift Valley mockingly told me to keep on dreaming which caused me to investigate further and I found that he had been absolutely right and I was indeed dreaming. The Kalenjin community seems to have firmly ignored all the pleas of the retired president and to get the message to him have started by voting out his favorite son, Gideon from Baringo Central which has to be the biggest slap in the face for Moi from the people he has served for so long.
As I had predicted, there are strong indications that PNU will have a drought of MPs in the 10th parliament. So far the party leading in Central is surprise, surprise—Safina. PNU is yet to land a single parliamentary seat anywhere in the country.
We will keep you posted.
