(Executive Director, Climate Network Africa)
For December 8th there is a plan for a climate parade in Nairobi.
If you will be attending or have more information, please feel free to comment. I would love to see photos and if you are a Kenyan blogger attending the parade please give me a heads up whenever you write about it. Thank you!
From KenyanPoet, The Climate change Orchestra will be playing as part of the WAPI event at the British Council. More details here.

For the Africa online crew there is something for you, you can join the Virtual Rally on the same day Dec 8th by writing about climate change. You do not have to alter the tone of your ‘blog voice’, a quip, a video, a rant, your thoughts… You can also sign a petition here.
At global voices online, we have a special page with links to blogs covering Bali and Climate Change politics, so do check it out. I have been going through the feeds to keep it fresh just for you, so do not miss out on the river of news coming out of Bali. If you are an African blogger writing about the environment, this is the week to do it, Global voices links will show up on the Reuters page. How is that for getting your voice heard!
(please leave me a note if you write something, email is environment [at] globalvoicesonline [dot] org)
Quotables from Prof. Wangari Maathai
* If you don’t raise your voice, then your environmentalism means nothing; it’s mere tokenism or opportunism.
* The environment is very important in the aspects of peace because when we destroy our resources, they become scarce and we fight over that.
* We have a special responsibility to the ecosystem of this planet. In making sure that other species survive we will be ensuring the survival of our own.

Dear Chris, attached is a mail I got today from Sungu ..... it was also addressed to John Troon with copy to Sam Okello and a few others ..... I like especially the careful way he spells 'Biwott' = 'Bewhat'. Maybe you should publish it under my name since it also talks about the chaotic Primaries and the cheating ..... Gor was a good man - maybe too honest and decent and not 'tricky' enough for being in politics !!!!!!!!! Marianne -------------------------------- Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2007 15:42:50 +0000 HI It has been a long time during which a lot of water has passed below the bridge. How are you and family doing? Hope well even with winter getting worse? I do hope you follow the Kenya Press. If you do, you will have noticed that i have now left Politics and will not be standing for elections next year having been "shoved" aside during Chaotic Party Primaries in which money and outright cheating was the order of the day! It appears that old Moi and his side kicks ' bewhat ' had a hand in it having infiltrated our party by their own admissions. They used lots of money and ensured that people who could raise the issue of Ouko in Parliament are blocked. Never the less these things have a way of resolving themselves in the fullness of time. Anyway now that i am out of politics I may revert to my old profession of insurance loss adjustments and investigations. I wish now to take this opportunity to thank you most sincerely for the Co-operation and assistant you extended to me as chair of the parliamentary select committee of the late Hon. Dr Robert j Ouko. The report lies in Parliament though it was never debated due to the interference of you know who! I also wish you the best in life as we all proceed to our sunset years God bless you, Gor Sungu 5 Most popular stories in Kumekucha today-5th Nov 1. According to the Business Daily the Safaricom IPO will be @ Kes: 5.00 per share with a staggering 15Bn shares on offer yes, 15,000,000,000 shares on offer. This values the company at Kes: 200.00Bn and the offer could rake in as much as Kes:75.00 Bn. With the shares having a Kes:0.50 par value. Minimum allocation is 1,000 shares at a cost of Kes:5,000.00 Though this is not confirmed and is from their sources, this approach is welcome and will favour the man on the street. Another key note is that for foreign investors, prices will be determined via book building which is like an auction with the lowest target being the offer price. Another development is that Stockbrokers want this IPO postponed and are against the book building approach for foreign investors with their suggestion being the use of a fixed premium price above what retail guys pay. On Standard and Nation. I fully support that foreign investors should pay a premium up and above what we pay for. Its taxpayer’s money that built Safaricom and thus taxpayers should be prioritized and the IPO should be tailored to their wallet. Local Institutional and corporate investors should as well pay a premium for the guarantee they get in preferred allocation and the fact that they only pay after allocation and thus the need to entice retail investors for the cost of holding money for a prolonged period only to be allocated a meager amount of shares. The split to get to 15Bn shares is very welcome so that there is enough cake for all of us to share and particularly reduce the need for refunds. I am also in the school of thought that local Kenyan individuals should have around 50% of this issue set aside for them, because there is enough capacity for us to accommodate the issue with the rest being skewed towards local institutions. But if this materializes as reported, then Safaricom will pay dearly for AGM’s, to host over 1 Million shareholders and also for the cost of dividend payments and distribution of financial reports. Previous posts on this topic . On a different note: > Another Kenyan emerges as the winner of the alternative Nobel Prize and raked in some $ 77,000. Read more. > Transcentury have also postponed their private placement reporting fear that investors might link their findraising efforts with their political affiliations. Notably is that some of the founding members are strongly aligned to political activity during this election period.

Is it possible for two people to have the same ID card number? I entered a random number 22222222 to the ECK website and alas, i got two people registered as voters, one in Embakasi and the other in Keiyo South with the same ID Card number . The other day I read a ridiculous vernacular 'propaganda' sms sent to an aquaintance of mine. It was in Kikuyu and it read:
Mwathani arokogitira maonduini mothe ma ngoma ta mirimu, aichi, mungiki, arogi, thuya, nguya, rwagi, ndaa, ngunguni, na muno Raila na kiama kia ODM.
It roughly translates to: May the Lord keep you safe from the wiles of the devil such as diseases, robbers, Mungiki, witches, stubborn insects (mosquitoes and the rest), and most of all from Raila and ODM.
Just sickening!

Have you ever looked out into the open sea?
It looks so formidable that as it extend out into the distance, it rises up and the sky bows down and they meet at the horizon. And yet while you stand at the shore, every inch of the sea is just at the same level as where you. And the sky remains as high everywhere as at the place where you are.
Does it sometimes seem like from where you stand, everyone else is just moving up towards the sky, and the sky compliments their effort by actually bending down to meet them? And you are the only one who seems to stay constant?
Well, that might just be all in your mind. Look out into the open see and you just might spot the illusion.

It is amazing how much innate intelligence the body holds inside itself. At any one time, the body knows what it needs and knows the easiest way if getting it. For example, if a starving person comes across a buffet, that person will automatically identify the food with the highest energy content and will gobble it down, rather than going for the most pleasant looking dish. It is in much the same way that people who struggle with weight problems find themselves eating foods that are high in calorie value. The problem is not necessarily that these people are fat because they eat too much, but rather they are hooked to fattening foods.
Could be that such a person’s body requires more energy than normal and that is why they crave energy giving foods. And so contrary to what the person might feel about themselves, the problem is not about filling the hole in the stomach but rather to bridge the energy deficit in the body. And so going on a diet will not work since the problem has not been addressed. Eating a tonne of vegetables still will leave the person ‘craving’ for something sweet – perhaps cake. Notice that even a simple thing as reading the word ‘cake’ will set the heart beating, and saliva coming into the mouth in anticipation. Anyway, even after eating the tonne of vegetables, the person will still feel hungry, and so they end up eating more and more. Meaning that a diet will only increase the misery since it does the opposite of what is expected.
Now consider exercise. Exercise creates a need for the body to burn calories in order to service the need for energy created by the work out. You might have noticed that unlike what a person might expect, exercise actually reduces the need for a person to eat more. More oxygen intake makes the body burn the energy reserves faster. This is similar to a wind stroking the flames of an open air hearth. By the way, have you noticed that overweight people easily run out of breathe and hence tire easily? Some actually wheeze or breathe through their mouths (highly discouraged). Learning proper breathing techniques will increase a person’s energy levels, and hence reduce the need for more calorie intake through eating.
Another way of raising energy levels is being in nature – maybe taking a stroll in the park. Another way is being in a happy positive mood. Anyone who has been in love – the ultimate feel good remedy - knows that it is creates a natural need to shed weight.
What I am trying to say here is that a person might have excessive weight because the body is incapable of converting the reserves into energy effectively. The only way to remedy the situation is by helping the body along. This can be realized by identifying the most effective way of raising the energy levels in the body, thereby using the existing reserves and hence eliminate the need to get energy from an external source (food) to top up. It would also be good if the person would try and get to the root of the problem. Sit down in front of a mirror and ask the body why it cannot use the stored up reserves of fat. One way or another, it will give you an answer for as I said, there is much more innate intelligence behind the meat suit than we might know. The body not only knows the answer but also knows how to tell it to you.

It is true that a person can refuse to be healed because he or she would not know what to do without their disease. Perhaps that person is hooked on the pity and sympathy that they get from friends, relatives and strangers courtesy of the disease, and they wouldn’t know where to find it from. Isn’t this like a kid who loves to play but has only identified a box set of needles as toys? Each time the kid plays he gets hurt. What would you advice the kid to do? Go back into the toy box and find another toy to play with! Similarly, the person who has the chronic disease would no longer need the disease if they found another source of emotional solace. That person would automatically get healed.
This approach can be taken for any situation that a person might find themselves in. Consider an unhealthy situation that you simply cannot get out of, identify the emotional comfort that it gives you, replace it with something else, and watch the situation revert back to perfect health.

An “Achilles’ heel” is a fatal weakness in spite of overall strength, actually or potentially leading to downfall.
The term comes from Greek myth stating that when Achilles was an infant, his mother dipped him in the river Styx resulting in his body becoming invulnerable where the water touched him. His mother held him by the thumb and forefinger at the heel, and hence the weakness in the place that was not touched by water.
Achilles’ invulnerability made him a phenomenal war hero. However, he was eventually to succumb and die from a heel wound as the result of a poisoned arrow fired by a young man named Paris.
“Achilles’ heel” is commonly used as an English expression for “area of weakness or vulnerable spot” But even without going into the dictionary for the definition, we all understand what it is like to have an area of weakness. A person’s “Achilles’ heel” makes him or her feel insecure especially since the person knows how negatively the vulnerable spot could affect their lives. In some cases the “Achilles’ heel” is a secret – maybe an obsession, or addiction, or phobea - that the owner lives with, forcing him or her to live a double life. Internally, the person walks around with shoulders hunched and head bowed due to shame and guilt. Externally, everything looks OK and this “the weight of the world on my shoulder” walk is well disguised by a formidable physical exterior and smooth veneer while in public. Like Achilles, the person makes great triumph while keeping their dreadful secret carefully wrapped. However, even though the person looks immaculate during the day, the kind of questions that constantly hound him or her are: What if someone else discovered what I am really like? Wouldn’t they laugh? Wouldn’t they leave me? Wouldn’t they gossip about me? Wouldn’t it bring me down? Would anyone understand? And this makes a person less than he or she ought to be.
It you know what I am talking about and are interested in becoming free again, you might check out information about a healing method called Emotional Freedom Technique. The basic EFT technique involves holding a disturbing memory or emotion in mind and simultaneously using the fingers to tap on a series of 12 specific points on the body. The theory behind EFT is that negative emotions are caused by disturbances in the body’s energy field and that tapping on the points while thinking of a negative emotion alters the body’s energy field, restoring it to “balance.”
Can it be so simple to be free? Yes, oh yes!
I believe that if you are truly determined, you will be able to make yourself whole again - with or without using EFT. Just imagine how it would feel to be free!
