The Professional Worrier
Tom had been a compulsive worrier for years until he found a way to overcome this problem.
His friends noticed the dramatic change. “You don’t seem to be worried about anything anymore.”
“I hired a professional worrier for $1000.00 a week, “Tom replied. “I haven’t had a single qualm since.”
“A thousand a week!” said Doug. “How are you going to pay him?” “That’s his problem.”
A friend shared this joke with me a couple of  days before I joined my current job, his way of saying, I had just been hired as a professional worrier. It was funny then, but reflecting on it now makes me realise just how much time I spend worrying. Be it about work, finances, relationships, this country, name it, I worry about it, and I’m not alone.
There are very few people who live truly carefree lives. Why do we worry so much?
Last evening, I was chatting with a dear one, expressing fears that I would mess up, or something would happen to mess  a situation that was working out alright, and he laughed.
‘Why worry about stuff that’s working ok?’ He asks.
‘When you start worrying, that’s when things get messed up. It’s working, let it be. If today you started to scrutinise your spectacles, looking for chips and stuff that isn’t right about them, you will walk out of here right now, in search of new ones. Yet, your glasses are serving you just fine right now’.
Wisest words I have heard in a while.
I am learning that I cannot be always in control
That sometimes, it’s actually a good thing NOT to be in control. Because you get to enjoy stuff when you’re not the one worrying whether it’s working alright, if it will work tomorrow, when it will fail.
The passenger always enjoys the flight more than the pilot, it’s no wonder pilots like to be passengers once in a while.
I’m not an avid Bible reader, but for the first time in my life Matthew 6:25-27 makes perfect sense. If I may quote a song we sang in high school;
do not worry over what to eat
what to wear, or put upon your feet
trust and pray, go do your best today
and leave it in the hands of the Lord.
That’s just about it.
The only way to find peace amidst the madness the world has become
warm

  1. Hi Rookie.

The joke on a professional worrier was very interesting. It certainly made my day bcoz I am a professional worrier and I now know I can provide employment to another to worry for me. The reference to the Bible is also very apt. I think it’s somewhere in the New Testament where they say that the birds of the air do not have a care in the world. That always struck me. I mean they wake up in the morning without knowing where their next meal will come from but sure enough they find one and return home in the evening to feed their young and fully content. Come to think of it many of us are really like that. When we set out in the morning we don’t know what the day portends for us. Alot of good could happen but we could also focus on the bad that could happen and that could prevent us from the leaving the confines of our homes.
